Verkami, 4 years co-creating culture!!!
Dear patrons, creators and Verkami users!
Verkami, this great house of culture, is four years old! And the atmosphere of creative freedom, fresh initiatives and fruitful collaboration is as powerful as ever. From the windows we can see creators in different fields all over the world striving night and day to make their dreams come true and delight legions of culture lovers.
This edifice has grown bigger and bigger as we’ve welcomed in the thousands of creators who now call this home and we’ve strengthened the foundations so we can throw open the doors to hundreds of Verkami users who flock here every day to discover beautiful, thrilling projects that make a difference.
Culture in all its manifold varieties flows in a steady stream from our warehouses to patrons’ letterboxes. And the shelves in the small museum of Verkami exhibits are overflowing with all forms of cultural expression: books, records, games, beers, theatre tickets and posters, comics, photos…
In 2014 our amazing resident projects included a gin that changes colour when you add the tonic, Congress Topless an art project that caused quite a stir at ARCO in Madrid , PepCola a new drink from Mallorca with local roots that’s raring to take on Coca-Cola, bamboo bikes, the first book containing series of 1980s cartoons and the news publication Cafèambllet with the biggest circulation in Catalonia that dares to tell the stories untouched by other media outlets whose hands are tied by the banks.
The team that’s always on hand to offer advice and support to all these resident projects has also grown this year so we can continue to give in-depth, personalised advice to each and every one of the projects we receive—a distinctive feature that sets us apart from all the other major crowdfunding platforms.
So, those of us who have been at actions stations all these years—proud parents Joan, Jonàs and Adrià Sala, music industry expert Àstrid Garcia and film producer Àritz Cirbián—have been joined by board game creator and expert Francisco Gallego ‘Pak’, journalist Roger Palà and the team at Crític digital media to support journalism and documentary projects, along with performing arts and publications expert Laura Milazzo. A team of cultural industry experts on hand 24 hours a day!
Beyond our four walls
But Verkami didn’t just stay home last year!
We continued to play an active role in the country’s cultural life and did our bit to offer our support.
We organised the 1st Verkami DAU Barcelona ProtoGames Competition for the best new board game to help make it a reality.
We supported investigative journalism as members of the CRÍTIC cooperative, the new digital media set up through crowdfunding.
We shared our tools, ideas and expertise on the XES Solidarity Economy Network.
We won the BEST Award for promoting popular catalan culture, thanks to our backing for hundreds of popular celebrations, events and human towers.
We offered creators advice at over 30 workshops, talks, postgraduate courses, festivals, conferences and fairs.
For the fourth year in succession, we worked with projects at the FiraTàrrega creative lab, one of the leading street theatre fairs.
And we put on the first live crowdfunding in history with the Factoría Cultural creative industries incubator at Matadero Madrid.
We also set up the Verkami Channels so that different institutions, organisations and initiatives can actively support ongoing campaigns. Over 200 projects have featured on different channels and benefited from their support.
Throughout last year we learnt about the crowdfunding experience of 15 Verkami creators and heard about Oriol Rodríguez’s creative process, and this year we’ll be bringing you more firsthand experiences from creators in many different fields. We’ve included them all below so you can catch up on any you missed!
And what does 2015 have in store?
2014 was another incredible year. This year crowdfunding carries on apace as a real alternative to traditional models for funding and consuming culture and creativity.
We’ll soon be opening a mini-site with all the best of 2014 and our four years of crowdfunding, so that’s enough spoilers for now:)
All the same, we couldn’t end this anniversary post without thanking you once again for putting your faith in us and believing in this model that’s changing the world of creative projects above and beyond funding. You’re the best!
This vast house of culture and creativity that is Verkami is always renovating itself and growing to offer creators the very best service and give Verkami users a unique experience. Stay tuned—this spring will be full of surprises!
All the best, many congratulations and Long live the crowdfunding revolution!
The Verkami team.-
