“Arreta” (“Attention” in Basque) is a compelling documentary filmed in Barcelona and Gernika, which runs for approximately 60 minutes.
The documentary follows Ainhoa who, after surviving breast cancer, made the decision to reconstruct her body with a tattoo, to give meaning to her scars and empower her in her new trans body.
The focal point of 'Arreta' is Ainhoa´s body. Our bodies are marked with life changing experiences.
Some changes to our bodies we desire and have control over and others arrive suddenly, unexpectedly, sometimes brutally, making us realise that life is not always ours to control.
Ainhoa had never been ill before the day that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a long period of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she was operated on, and the breast that was affected by the cancer was removed. Contrary to the hospital's advice, Ainhoa decided not to have an implant but to redefine her body by having the other breast removed.
“Arreta” commences with a naked body marked by two scars that are the physical legacy of the cancer and – with the desire to transpose these marks with another chosen one: a tattoo.
This documentary is the story of Ainhoa's desire and how it materialises, how it is shared with others, how it transforms, and finally, how it changes all of us – not only Ainhoa but also the people who travel with her. It is a long process throughout which Ainhoa becomes increasingly empowered in her new body, with a vitality that confronts us with it's immediacy.
“Arreta means attention and awareness”, says Ainhoa. Attention to what? Perhaps that life will never stop surprising us with the most seemingly trivial of things…the passing of time..
The process
The first time that Ainhoa Irueta, accompanied by her friend Mireia Gascón, went to see Tayri Rodíguez to propose that she tattooed her chest, Tayri said: “We´ll have to film this”…and that was how the journey began.
For a year we filmed the progress of Ainhoa´s tattoo with Tayri, along with doctor's and hospital appointments and the talks at feminist gatherings where Ainhoa shared her “cancerous butch” experience.
During this time, Mireia Gascón, part of the documentary team, became ill with cancer. This impacted dramatically on the filming and on our lives, reminding us all that illness and death are always with us.
The making of the documentary has been a collective process with both political and emotional dimensions: the close relationships that already existed between the team before starting out on this journey; those that were constructed during it; the spaces that were shared and the presence and absence of those involved.
After almost three years of work we are currently finalising the editing of the documentary and we need your help to finish it.

joint effort by Ainhoa Irueta, Mireia Gascón, Tayri Rodríguez and María Berzosa.
