Antonio Monedero: "Mi Timbau". Video-Book about this Afro-Brazilian percussion instrument.

7 years ago I decided to write a book about timbau this great instrument developed in Salvador da Bahia, in the research process I learned Portuguese and made two trips to this city to study the sources and origins in order to obtain a faithful and quality work.

This video-book about the timbau contains the history, technique, rhythms, timbau rodas, solos, and much more about the instrument that brought music from Salvador de Bahia to the entire world.

Due to copyright issues, this book DOES NOT contain song transcriptions, nor does it name any song or author in its entirety.

The book will be published in digital (pdf) and physical format and the videos will be available on the web at www.mitimbau.com. Spanish, Portuguese and English will be available.

Whether you are an unskilled person or an advanced musician, you will find new information suited to your level and requirements. This book is aimed at both people who play street batuque and stage and studio musicians who want to expand their knowledge both on Timbau and on the “hand technique”.

Below is a small sample of the book with 16 pages of the 136 total.

The physical paperback will only be available in Spanish, with a limited print run of 100 copies. It will be wire-o bound because it's a book that will spend a lot of time open to a specific page for study, it's a book of scores, not for reading.

What will you gain by contributing to this crowdfunding?

You have several rewards for the contribution to the project, surely you will find the most suitable for your needs and objectives.

After crowdfunding, the price of the book and access to the videos will increase by 30%.

T-shirts: If you want the project to go ahead because you like music, and you support cultural expansion, but you don't play, I have some T-shirts as rewards. All four models will be available in sizes from S to 2XL. Here are the models:

Drumhead: You can also get this uniquely designed 14" drumheadh. This drawing has been made by Trasczb.

Intensive Course: One of the rewards is a 4-hour intensive course. It will be held in Madrid, at my studio, which currently has a capacity for 20 people.

With this reward, you'll be entered into the drawing for the Timbau Contemporânea and receive a discount on T-shirts and patches. This course will have several possible dates, all on Saturdays or Sundays, and can be taken online. It will also be recorded and sent by email. It will take place during the 2025/26 school year.

Workshop: Another of the rewards that would most help carry out this project is the "Workshops for festivals and groups" would be 4 hours of workshops, 5 books, 5 t-shirts, 5 video access, 5 tickets for the timbau Contemporânea brand raffle and a signed-personalized patch.

Dinner: Finally, a dinner at a Brazilian restaurant with the book's author to discuss the history of timbau and the music of Salvador de Bahia: anecdotes, curiosities, open secrets, and surprises. This reward includes: 2 books, 2 T-shirts, 2 video access, 2 Contemporânea timbau raffle tickets, two of each reward so you can give it to whomever you want, and a signed and personalized patch. This is for one person only, but it could be done for more people.

In addition, a Contemporânea brand Timbau will be raffled off. It's made of 14" x 70cm aluminum and has 16 tensioners.

Timbau shipping costs are only covered for Europe.

Where will your contributions go?

Contributed to this crowdfunding you will help me to carry out this project, I still have the expenses with the publication of the book, layout, graphic design, web development, digital marketing, payment for video editing and as expenses from taxes and sending copies for all users.

Planned schedule

If the project goes ahead, the rewards would begin to be sent in July 2025 and the website would be available. Workshops and intensive courses would be held from that date onward depending on the availability of the people who contribute.

Antonio Monedero is a musician, percussionist, drummer, producer, music researcher and teacher with over 20 years of experience, and this is how he shows himself in this careful and elaborate work.
