Sex and Revolution in Cuba is a photographic project that I have developed over three years and that I have been able to document about the LGBTI community in this country, at a time of socio-political changes.
A photographic essay that gives visibility and voice to the collective LGBTI of Cuba, who for decades have suffered homophobic policies.
In recent years on the island begins a series of socio-economic changes, and one of them is related to the new political sensitization on sexual diversity and gender identity, led by Mariela Castro (daughter of the current president), and director National Center for sex Education of Cuba. Changes that some see as a simple strategy of political marketing on Human Rights.
This book will collect their stories and testimonies. An intimate portrait of reality, life and the everyday life of homosexuals in Cuba from different socioeconomic classes, through extensive investigation on the real impact that these social policies have had on the LGBTI community, where issues are addressed as marginalization, violence, discrimination, prostitution, HIV among other issues, but also the everyday, activism, and hope.
How will be the book?
It will be a photo book author.
It will have a magnificent prologue of Abel Sierra Madero a Cuban anthropologist specializing in the subject, and author of the only book on homosexuality in Cuba.
It will be a book of 21 cm high by 24 cm long.
Your patronage
With your contributions we will publish this book full of stories, emotions, humanity and great photography.
It will allow to give visibility to all those testimonies of anonymous people that somehow represent the stories of many others like them in the world.
Although in many developed countries have made great progress on rights for LGBTI people, there are still plenty to do. We cannot forget that exists today countries where being a person LGTBI supposed a persecution, imprisonment, and in some cases even the death penalty.
Although it is initiating a new way of change in Cuba after 50 years of homophobic policies, it is important to continue talking about the rights of homosexuals. I try to do this book with great enthusiasm and love, combining documentary photography and anthropology. Thanks to your contributions it may see the light.
