Costuras a flor de piel means something like: Sewed on bare skin. The project originated in Spain yet covers a global issue which touches most families in one way or another: breast cancer.
With this campaign we ask for your support in covering the production costs of a photographic exhibition to raise awareness about this disease. We’re very close to concluding the project – the photos have already been taken!
OBJECTIVE
Much of my work as a documentary filmmaker and photographer has been focused on issues which particularly concern women. In this case I am staying close to home by paying tribute to those who have been affected by breast cancer – underlining their fighting spirit, their compromised femininity, their doubts and fears, and their resolve to survive.
My objective is simple: to create greater awareness. The aim is to increase knowledge among the public by making the disease visible. In order to do this, the strongest images have been selected to create a travelling exhibition. It will be flexible in size so a wide variety of entities can display the photos.
THE IMAGES
Over a period of two years, more than 200 women of different ages offered to be photographed semi-nude (for most this was a first) to contribute to this project.
Some of them were under treatment at the time and didn’t hesitate to share their experience. Others chose to participate because they had a family member or friend affected by cancer.
To witness all this generosity on the part of so many women was extremely moving.
PARTNERS
To ensure a wide reach for the project, I have partnered with the Spanish oncology umbrella organization Grupo Español de Pacientes con Cáncer (GEPAC), a charity which represents and supports a wide variety of patient groups. One of its goals is to create awareness about the daily reality of people affected by cancer. As the exhibition starts travelling internationally, we will team up with similar organizations in other countries.
The management of the exhibition is in the good hands of Barcelona-based líniazero edicions, a publishing company whose staff share a special interest in our common cause.
THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition will be easy to manipulate and transport so that it can be shown in a variety of spaces. It will be available to entities and organizations under the condition that they guarantee free access to the general public. With your help, we’ll be able to launch its first installment in January 2014!
The exhibition consists of the following elements:
• 30 photographic images (high quality black & white prints of 30x40 cm, in passe-partout and framed).
• 6 additional frames containing a short presentation, texts created by some of the project’s models, a collection of smaller photographs of women who have participated in the project, and credits.
• A catalogue, printed digitally and tailormade for each specific location.
• An online promotional campaign through the web and social media. Facebook is currently our preferred way of communication so please like our page!
WHERE WILL YOUR DONATIONS GO?
The money raised will pay the costs related to:
• Printing and framing the photographs.
• Designing the catalogue.
• Designing and printing other elements of the exhibition (posters, texts).
• Creating and distributing the incentives associated with your donations.

In case we surpass our set goal, we will use the additional funds to:

• Sponsor exhibitions for entities that cannot cover the related costs of transport, insurance, catalogue printing, etc.
• Create a second copy of the exhibition in order to reach a wider audience.
• Internationalise the exhibition. It may end up in a space near you!

Hoy se inaugura en Igualada (Barcelona) el festival FineArt que reúne 46 exposiciones de fotografía, entre ellas Costuras a flor de piel. El 8 de marzo participamos en una mesa redonda organizada por la Asociación Española contra el Cáncer y el 17 de marzo Koen Suidgeest ofrecerá una charla bajo el título "La imagen al servicio de la acción social". FineArt photography festival opening today in Igualada (Barcelona) shows 46 exhibitions including Costuras – Living with breast cancer. On March 8th we participate on a panel organized by the Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC) and on March 17th Koen Suidgeest will be giving a talk on the role of images in connection with social issues. Hoy la caja con las fotos de Costuras a flor de piel emprende el viaje hasta Holanda. La semana que viene montamos en La Haya, en el vestíbulo del ayuntamiento, un espacio por el que pasan más de 30.000 personas cada día.
Estamos felices de que las mujeres holandesas que participaron en el proyecto tengan la exposición tan cerca y también de que mucha más gente tenga la oportunidad de ver estas fotos maravillosas.
Y contentos de poder compartirlo contigo, que lo has hecho posible.
Today the box containing the photographs of Costuras is leaving to the Netherlands. Next week the exhibition will be set up in the main entrance of The Hague town hall, where each day over 30,000 people will have a chance to see it.
We are happy that the Dutch women who participated will be able to see the exhibition and also that so many people will have the possibility to enjoy these amazing photographs.
And of course, we are happy to share this news with you, who made it possible.

Costuras visits a new city!
Our exhibition will be arriving in Tarragona (Spain) this week to be seen in a privileged setting: Tinglado number 1 at the harbour. Don't miss it if you happen to be around.
We thank Tarraco August Rotary Club, AECC and Port Tarraco to make it possible. And we thank you, because without your collaboration Costuras wouldn't even exist.
Costuras a flor de piel, nuestra exposición sobre cáncer de mama, se inaugura hoy en el Pabellón Docente del Hospital Vall d'Hebron de Barcelona, donde se podrá visitar hasta el 10 de octubre.
Con este ya son 14 los sitios en los que ha expuesto, en 9 ciudades de España y Portugal, y la han visto más de 18.000 personas. ¡Es un gran éxito! Es cierto que los números no son lo que más nos importa, sino el impacto que tiene en las personas que la ven. Estos son algunos de los numerosos comentarios que nos han llegado:

Costuras a flor de piel, la exposición sobre cáncer de piel que ayudaste a producir, continua viajando. Hasta el 19 de junio se puede ver en el hospital Son Espases de Palma de Mallorca y, del 22 de junio al 4 de julio, en el hospital Son Llàtzer.

Yesterday Costuras – Living with Breast Cancer opened in the Escuela Andaluza de Salud Pública in Granada (Spain). This is the 11th trip of the exhibition that you helped to finance in 2013. Thus a part of this success belongs to you.

Koen Suidgeest, the photographer who took the pictures for our exhibition, is about to embark on a new project. It’s a deeply touching photographic documentary about street children with children, i.e. homeless kids who have become parents. He launched a crowdfunding campaign this week, and I'd like to encourage you to support it. Here's what he writes:
"Back in 2008, I visited a shelter for young mothers in Managua. There I did portraits of six girls, aged between 12-17, who had been rescued off the street and had just given birth to their babies. In my upcoming project, which will take place in April, I will return to Nicaragua to try and find them, and photograph their lives as they are living it today. The result will be an exhibition which will span eight years."

Costuras will be in Sevilla from the 2 to the 22 February, in the hall of the Hospital Universitario Virgen Macarena, invited by the Oncology Department. We are very happy because it is the 10th exhibition and the first time to be shown as a whole in a hospital.

Since last Monday and to Friday 30 October, Costuras a flor de piel can be seen at the COAM in Madrid as part of the events to @Solti's 20th anniversary.
And from November 4 to 18 it will be visiting Porto (Portugal), organized by Sanofi and in cooperation with the Centro de Mama do Centro Hospitalar de São João.
Próxima estación: ¡Santander! Costuras sale mañana hacia Cantabria, y estará expuesta en el patio del Parlamento desde el 19 hasta el 23 de octubre. Si estáis en esa maravillosa ciudad, ¡id a verla! Abierto de 9 a 20h.

Costuras a flor de piel opened yesterday in the beautiful cloister of Convento de la Merced in Ciudad Real (Spain). In the next weeks AMUMA will be organising several activities around breast cancer in that very place. The exhibition will remain open until the 27 October.
