"New Landscape for Cataia" will be a photobook created with images taken in Greenland in the spring of 2023. The book aims to visually explore themes of identity and landscape, centrality, boundaries, and isolation, with climate change serving as a secondary subject.
The Arctic
- ( Arkticos, the land of the polar bear)*
One of the harshest and most inhospitable areas on earth for human life, and yet one of the most fragile and vulnerable to climate change. Its perennial ice, which cools the earth, is warming up twice as fast as the rest of the planet.
The communities that live there are also vulnerable, as they must face the challenges of global warming and the industrialization of their society. Land of myths, what was once a limit and exotic is now one of the faces at the forefront of current challenges.
While climate change seems to dominate the external reality, I also want to focus my gaze on how the environment and landscape interact with our identity, on the connections between the physical and emotional. In an environment that seems to invite isolation and introspection, what are the threads that connect us with the landscape? Those frozen landscapes seem like a good visual metaphor to reflect on isolation. Ice, what has no life, what doesn't relate and only returns its cold touch. How does one relate to such an extreme and inhospitable environment? How real is this isolation that I presuppose?
These are questions asked by a European, from pure ignorance and with great interest in these frozen landscapes, which I would like to explore with this project.
Recently, I read an article that reflected on art and climate change, which stated that any didactic artistic critique that seeks to raise awareness about climate change, with the goal of immediate action to fight against it, tends to have a minimum impact on our conscience. Our attention is reduced, our lives are short, and it's hard for us to think in the long term about an experience that we may not live.
We all know about it, about the consequences we are starting to suffer, and about the need to make changes in our societies. Works that confront us with our limits, with our conception of time, and with our position within a wider ecology have a deeper impact.
These works do not demand immediate action from us, but rather broaden our psychological capacity to act. Under this premise, I want to approach this photographic project.
WHERE AND WHEN
Thanks to the invitation from the Artic Culture Lab organization ( https://www.arcticculturelab.no/ ) I will be conducting an artist residency in Ilulissat, West Greenland, to carry out this photography project. From March to May 2023, I will be in Greenland taking photographs for the project and conducting photography workshops with the local people where I will get to know their stories better.
**Artistic Residency: Program that offers artists and other creative professionals the time, space and resources to work, individually or collectively, in areas related to their artistic practice.*
ABOUT THE REWARDS
Photobook "New landscape for Cataia".
I can't show you what the content of the photobook will be yet, I will create it during the artist residency. If you want to take a look at the type of photography I usually do, you can browse my website and Instagram. Although I feel more comfortable working in black and white, I think the photographs of this project will be in color. I want to create a visual story where personal stories are intertwined with the landscape, with the latter being another actor in the story.
