GRACIAS

Gracias a todos los mecenas.

SAVE THE MEDITERRANEAN FAN MUSSEL !

The fan mussel (* Pinna nobilis *) is the largest species of bivalve mollusc in the Mediterranean Sea.

It is currently in critical danger of extinction due to a disease provoked by a protozoan that causes mortalities close to 100% of the populations.

The only surviving populations on the Spanish shores are in the Ebro Delta (Tarragona) and in the Mar Menor (Murcia).

We want the Ebro Delta area to become a sanctuary for the surviving fan mussels facilitating, in the future, the recovery of the species in the whole Mediterranean.

The project SAVE THE MEDITERRANEAN FAN MUSSEL has four goals:

1.- Rescue of the young specimens trapped in the shallow sand bars, where they are exposed to desiccation and the blows of the boats' propellers that transit their habitat, and transplant them into adjacent areas to a greater depth. It is estimated that there are still about 2,000 specimens of juvenile fan mussels that can be transferred in the Alfacs Bay.

2.- Census and monitoring of the individuals of the Fangar Bay (a population of fan mussels different from those of the Alfacs Bay).

The scientific and technical direction will be in charge of scientists of the IRTA - Sant Carles de la Ràpita.

If the requested crowdfunding goal is exceeded, the following actions would be started:

3.- Search and concentration of surviving fan mussel individuals located at the entrance of the Alfacs Bay, potentially resistant to the disease, by transferring them to an area restricted to navigation, to avoid propeller blows and to facilitate their reproduction.

4.- Monitoring the evolution of the population of fan mussel in the Alfacs Bay (survival and populations recruitment of transferred individuals).

** WE NEED YOUR HELP **

The project "SAVE THE MEDITERRANEAN FAN MUSSEL" needs your help to turn the Ebro Delta bays into a SANCTUARY for the species, in order to maintain a large and healthy population.

We will favor its protection, consolidation and expansion.

Contribute to its conservation!

    Moltes gràcies

  • Muchas gracias.
