PRESENTATION
“PIL PIL” is the first professional short film written and directed by Kristina Zorita. The film mixes humour, surrealism and gastronomy and, at the same time, analyses the power relationships. 75 % of the crewmembers are women.
WHY “PIL PIL”
The film talks about the need of restraint in unbalanced power situations. At the same time, we make fun of the Basque obsession with gastronomy and culinary matters.
THE PRODUCTION COMPANY
IZAR films was founded by Izaskun Arandia in 2009. It has produced seven short films, three features and a theatre play. The company strives to work with socially driven issues. Its main philosophy is gender equality and women-led projects, so it backs projects with more than 50 % female crews and mainly, projects directed by women.
SYNOPSIS
A Saturday night in a Basque Country road. Maite and Ane are coming home from a dinner with friends. Ane, the driver, has not had any alcohol. Maite has drunk some wine and a couple of gin and tonics. They are stopped at a sobriety checkpoint. Ane is not worried, since she has stuck to non alcoholic beverages.
But when an ertzaina (a Basque policeman) asks Maite about the lunchbox on her lap, a dispute on culinary matters sparks. The row leads Maite to an unforeseen Kafkaesque situation.
DIRECTOR’S NOTES
Once stopped at a checkpoint, I started thinking: “What would happen if a drunk person replied back to the police at a sobriety checkpoint?”. The police could scare us but, at the same time, the alcohol consumed could “encourage” us.
One of the teachings from Goya award winner writer Michel Gaztambide spurred my writing of this short film. He told us that a daily life situation could be the base of a powerful story. So I took that question at the checkpoint and wrote this story.
The short film has two different parts. The first half, at the checkpoint, is an absurd situation full of humour. The second half takes part at the police station where the light and sounds make. Maite feel trapped. Moreover, the previous boasting favoured by alcohol has disappeared and it’s turned into confusion and pain. Some expressionism details will be depicted in these scenes.

WHAT WE NEED THE MONEY FOR
We would like to waive some fees to the professional team behind the project. Some of the money will use to rent the material and feed the crew. If there is any money left, this will pay the postproduction and we will be able to send the film to festivals.
