History

In the summer of 1968, coinciding with the boom of tourism in Spain, a new sound emerged in the gypsy ghettos of Barcelona put to dance half of the world. Countries as Holland, Germany or Mexico surrendered to the sound of Pedro Pubill Calaf, Peret (a gypsy of humble origin born in the barracks of Mataró) who, with only a Spanish guitar and two palmeros, he mixed the beat of rock&roll with the sound of Cuban guaracha, mambo and flamenco, giving birth to this new genre: the Catalan rumba.

But unexpectedly in 1982, Peret leaves the music to devote himself fully to religion. Become pastor of the Evangelist Church of Filadelfia, Peret disappears for 10 years from the public scene. Also at that time the Catalan rumba had ceased to be popular, since by being contemporary with the Franco regime, had been related to this dark period.

The years go by, and in the 90s the Catalan rumba is claimed by a new generation of musicians that fuses it with other sounds.

Peret and his music are back in fashion, and the city of Barcelona surrenders in homage, inviting him in 1992 to play at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games.

At that time begins to be called "the King of the Rumba", and various and very different theories arise about the origin of the Catalan rumba. But when Peret tries to claim his role as creator (and not as a king), many do not take him seriously.

In 2018, four years after Peret's death, his family reunites during the days leading up to Amy's wedding.

During those meetings Santa Salvat (granddaughter of Peret and mother of Amy), will try to investigate the origins of this music, not infrequently submitted to controversy.

Through these conversations, and the voiceover of the musician himself, the film makes the viewer travel, reviewing the places and stories that defined his life and the birth of the Catalan rumba. Can you help us tell it?

The birth of "Yo soy la rumba"

"Yo soy la rumba" arises when, at the end of 2015, Santa Salvat proposes to the director Paloma Zapata to carry out this project. Santa is convinced that there is not a definitive documentary about her grandfather, and that after the birth of the Catalan rumba there are many stories still to be told.

It is at that moment when we begin the investigation and the search for documents and revealing testimonies. A large number of photographs and recordings appear, and the script begins to be written.

More than two years later, after getting a large number of supports, a large part of the funding, we have a project with a form and a script ready to be shot. Can you help us get it?

How is going to be our documentary?

Like many gypsy artists, Peret surrounded himself with his family to develop his artistic project.

They accompanied him on his travels around the world at the most successful time, but they were also there during the process of creation of his music.

No one better than them can tell how everything happened. Interestingly, although there has been extensive speculation on this topic, many of these testimonies have never been collected.

The filming of the film takes place coinciding with the wedding of one of Peret's great-granddaughters:Amy..

In these days of reunion and celebration, this gypsy family meets in casual, everyday situations, sharing music, conversations and memories, which are revealing to clarify the true origin of Catalan rumba.

These scenes alternate with the passionate voiceover of Peret himself, who with great wisdom recounts some of the episodes that marked his life: from his birth in the shanties of Mataró to his international success, going through his decline and his final resurrection.

Through this journey we will discover in depth the famous man, but also the unknown. The adventurer and the father of a family. The gypsy and the payo. To the exaggerated narrator and the one who hides details. To the one that uses a corrosive sense of humor and that is moved without remedy. To the wise man who at the end of his life knew how to draw conclusions; a chronicle about his way of thinking, about his family, about his songs, about his peculiar way of living, in short, about his fears and desires.

We will try to solve the mystery of the life of the musician who one day pulled from the hat one of the greatest cultural milestones of popular music made in our country.

After an exhaustive search work of more than two years, we have come to collect a large number of archive images, audio recordings and other documents, many of them unpublished. This valuable material documents the most unknown part of Peret's biography.

Peret's story is full of fantastic stories, and although he says they are real, they are often hard to believe. In these most capricious chapters the director uses fiction, with recreated scenes in which, instead of actors, Peret's own relatives are those who give life to characters from other eras.

Peret has already left but his legacy will never leave. Peret affirmed that it is always "preferable to laugh than to cry". So ... let's continue making palms

The documentary has finally have a careful selection of original Peret musical themes for the soundtrack of the film, many of them belonging to his first musical era (they are the most unknown, and of great artistic quality). We will also have a luxury BSO, composed by Daniel Pubill, grandson and musical disciple of the teacher.

About us

The initiative to make this film comes from Santa Salvat, granddaughter of Peret, who collects one of his grandfather's last wishes: to take his life to the cinema. However, it is not an isolated project, but inscribed in a much more ambitious plan that develops together with his brother Daniel Pubill, and that includes the publication of a posthumous album, the organization of a concert tribute (produced by El Terrat) and the launching of a new group of "pure" Catalan rumba, of which Daniel and Santa are components.

To put the film on its feet, Santa has Paloma Zapata audiovisual producer whose trajectory is strongly linked to music, since for more than ten years she has developed a prolific activity as a video clip director through a producer La Fábrica Naranja, As a curious fact, she was responsible for directing Peret's latest video clip in 2009:"El muerto vivo". "Yo soy la rumba" is the director's second feature film, after“Casamance, la banda sonora de un viaje” creative documentary shot in Africa, selected in more than 20 festivals around the world and broadcast on Movistar +.
