This film was born in 2016 during the Master in Filmmaking at Escuela Superior de Cine de Cataluña (ESCAC), as a final graduation project. It is written and directed by Adelaida Lamas. Nowadays, it is being shoot again with more means after ESCAC Films has decided to select it to produce it.

POETRY ONLY DIES WHEN IT ENDS

It tells a tiny but brave story about the friendship, self-improvement and courage of two teenaged friends (19 years old) who are growing up, but they still feel pretty lost. It is a bitter and emotional portrait of one of them: Beatriz, who after a strange discovery needs to make a change in her life. That becomes her main stimulus, which pushes her to believe in herself. She will find that being human means having deep longings for something magical to happen in our lives.

The Project

It is born from the risk and ambition of some filmmaking students who wanted to make movies from the first internship they got; shooting exteriors, at night, and following some characters closely with a hand-camera trying to reach their inside world. This ambition was accompanied by a good dose of complications that made the shooting something tragic that kept testing us. Even so, our eagerness of moving forward has always been bigger than the setbacks that multiplied our budget as we carried on. We have shot a lot, and we haven’t stopped until we found the material we were looking for. Our thank-you list is endless, because this project has been built thanks to the big human chain formed by La poesía sólo muere cuando termina’s team, our friends and families, and other wonderful people that have believed on this project. Everyone has grown up along with our characters and, if there’s something that we have learnt, it is that the love for what we do can beat anything.

Your help

With this initiative that we now launch from Verkami, we want to make sure that every person who collaborates with making our dream a reality can become a part of it, and that we can thank you for joining us in our adventure of taking 'La poesía sólo muere cuando termina' to the theatres. Expenses have surpassed 5,000 euros just in shooting, which has to be added to the 3,000 euros for the final mixing (master HDCAM, DCP and QT HD). At this point in time, we have no more money to invest on this project and on the important things that it still needs. :----( That is why we have set the minimum goal in 4,500 euros; that’s the last push we need to take the leap into distributing this film in an international circuit of festivals , where we can make it known, as well as paying the taxes and the costs of the crowdfunding process (taxes, prices).

With your help, we can make this narrative film reach as far as possible to fill the big screen with poetry. A film which is launching the work of many people who have worked their fingers to the bone without getting paid anything in return.

Comments of the director

I was fortuned enough to work on this project for months with people who supported me and are full of talent. My intention was to write a story with an academic structure that contained something tiny that would become bigger at the end of the film. Something that would be worth it to present to the spectator: a universal trip. The story that I developed, although it is not autobiographical, flourishes from the fear to grow up created by a personal reflection at a moment of vital change after my brand new maternity. I was keen on it being a voyage of discovery that stimulated the learning and evolution of the characters, using as a background a decadent aesthetic, halfway between experimental and naturalistic, with the outskirts of Barcelona as the setting for their adventure. The locations are part of the story they describe and help define characters that feel left out by society. Personally, I am interested in contrasts. The human being is contradictory, and I create characters that eare full of contradictions, and therein lies their beauty –or at least that is where my interest is focused-. I believe that life is made of opposites, and that in the most complex of emotions we usually find this kind of struggle within our own feelings. Nothing is entirely of one colour. That is what I wanted to develop in this story. Emotions act on two different levels at all times. Nothing is just funny, nor is it all sad.

This experimental intent of searching for the unknown and of growing through experiences led us to extremely difficult times. One of the biggest challenges we took on was to work with non-professional actresses in order to find hidden truths that are uncontrollable on the set, and that would have never been there otherwise. Finding the magic and catching it for a few seconds just to let it go again. That was our challenge.

I can only say that, despite every setback, I’ll always remember warmly the fantastic human team that I worked with. They gave it all, proving day after day that they firmly believed in what we were doing: telling stories that were worth being shared without sacrificing a single ounce of the natural beauty that dwells on the simple thing in life. I hope you now feel like believing in us and in poetry!
