Cepas de la Culebra: About the project
This is a small and new wine project in which we will sell the wine we produce with the grapes we get exclusively from the vineyard our family owns, which was planted back in 1940’s by our grandparents.
We thought that possibly the best thing to do when starting is to produce a Special Edition of our wine. And that’s what we are doing here! We are going to produce a Special Limited Edition of Cepas de la Culebra exlusively for backers of this crowdfunding Project.
This Cepas de la Culebra Crowdfunding Special Edition will be a young red wine. To produce the wine we will mix together the three grape varieties we’ve got in our vineyard (Mencía -90%-, Tempranillo -5%- and Palomino -5%-).
Following our traditional vinification process, we will allow an alcoholic fermentation with skins to happen naturally, using no additives but some sulphites.
This year our grapes are specially sweet and healty due to great weather conditions so you can expect a young red full of fruit, fresh and lively.
We might decide to age it two or three months in oak, we’ll let you know if that happens.
Our vineyard
Our vineyard is located in the village of Riofrío de Aliste (Province of Zamora, in the North-West of Spain) and the main varieties we have are Mencía (90% of the vineyard), Tempranillo (5%) and Palomino (5%).
We are in the middle of ‘Sierra de la Culebra’ mountain range (It was recently awarded as Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO under the Project ‘Meseta Ibérica’ which also includes some other parts of the province of Salamanca and the portuguese border.
Summer time is very warm and dry here, and winters are chilly (Even having some snow and frost). Our vineyard is located 780 m above the sea level, in a plain, sunny and ventilated area where the soil is made of sandstone, slime and clay (Also slate, which is the main rock you can find in the area). It’s a poor soil that drains well, suitable for vineyards to grow.
We produce our wines following traditional vinification methods. We only add some sulphites to our wine, that’s all. All the rest is pure grape juice fermented.
Our harvest is done in a single day. In the same day we crush and press the grapes. Usually alcoholic fermentation takes up to 3-4 weeks, after which we normally change the new wine to oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation and ageing take place.
Our wine production will be very limited due to the size of our vineyard. The good thing about this is that we will remain in control of each and every process related to grape growing and wine production.
Destination of your contributions
1- Costs of production and delivery of the wine, including crowdfunding fees, from our vineyard to your home.
2- The remaining amount –if any- will be used to cover for the expenses of establishing our winery, marketing costs and acquisition of equipments (Like tanks, barrels, etc)

Hola Juan Carlos,
