The beginning: a powerful idea born from the ruins.

It all began with a mural for Palestine, painted amid the ruins of an abandoned factory. When the artist finished, he asked three passing youngsters for their thoughts — a simple question that sparked a powerful conversation.

The next day, while photographing his work, the artist remembered that conversation with the youngsters and wondered if other artists might want to join him. The room — bright, spacious, and full of empty walls — was perfect for it. He recorded an audio message and shared it with his network of artists.

The making: a safe space for art and resistance.

All artists accepted — and 🇵🇸 Red Zone Gallery was born. What began as a one-day collective action evolved into a space in constant creation. Word spread organically, and for nearly two months, dozens of artists worked there — illegally and without protection — united in denouncing the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

As they transformed the space, they planned its public opening, staying true to the same principle that gave birth to the Gallery: using art to attract attention, spark dialogue, and raise awareness about Palestine. Their Instagram account fueled the anticipation — a secret gallery taking shape in an undisclosed location on the outskirts of Lisbon. The mystery helped rally a team of volunteers and ensured the opening would be not only organized but also capture the attention of the media.

The opening: an exhibition facing destruction.

On September 27th, the opening took place. Despite the rain, hundreds of visitors came together for a day fully dedicated to Palestine — featuring talks, performances, and live music. Today, the Gallery remains open, visited daily by those who manage to discover its location. The media continue to follow the project, with articles and reports being published. As the space is unprotected, the exhibition’s duration is uncertain — making this book the only way to preserve the legacy and the story behind this extraordinary event.
