Marisma is an independent printed magazine that provides an intimate perspective on contemporary culture and travel. It is bilingual Spanish-English. The first issue’s ready to go to print, and we're looking for support to cover printing costs.
Marisma’s debut issue presents a panorama of different lived experiences from present-day Andalusian culture. The magazine invites you to imagine a form of tourism that is less materialistic, by shining a light on the people and stories of a region.
Marisma can complement traditional travel guides if you want a spark of inspiration for your next adventure, and it's also an enjoyable read if you want to learn about a region's culture.
Content of the First Issue
- I’ll Take you Sailing in my Bay, Because I’m a Fisherman: The wealth of the Atlantic Ocean in the Bay of Cádiz, told through a boat trip with fisherman Emilio Marín.
- Daguerréotypes, Past and Present: A reinterpretation of the documentary Daguerréotypes by Agnès Varda, in a working class neighbourhood of Seville fifty years later. A peek into the everyday life of a neighbourhood through its shops and the people that run them.
- In the Shadow of the Olive Tree: Cristina Reyes, an artist from Jaén who is based in Granada, uses a dialogue with herself to reflect on the impact that the olive tree has had on the identity of people from Jaén.
- Flamenco, an Imagined Community: Conversation with Pedro Lópeh, a flamenco specialist. His discourse dismantles the myths that this art is the identity and property of gypsy people and Andalusians
- A Symphony of Andalusian Wines: A tour of small artisan wineries in the wine regions of Andalusia. The region makes other wines apart from Sherries, and they’re well worth tasting!
- Dreams of Electric Nights: A portrait of youth. Extracts from the photographic exhibition by Clara Gámiz at the Palacio Condes de Gabia in Granada in early 2025.
- Mundane Things for the Divine Fantasy: The town of El Gastor, in the province of Cádiz, holds impressive Corpus Christi celebrations that border on the surreal.
- AZOTEA. A Rooftop Haven From the Chaos Below: An album of people's memories from household rooftops.
- They Call me Artist, and Sacred is my Surname: Seville’s Easter festivities sustain a fascinating fabric of traditional artisans that would have disappeared without people holding these celebrations sacred. Can we imagine a future where these artisans have work without the church?
- Nurturing our Oasis: The international eco-social community of Sunseed Desert Technology has spent thirty years studying how to live in a healthy and sustainable way while adapting to the scarcity of resources in the Tabernas desert (Almería), the only desert in Europe.

Rewards. More Info
The magazine measures 17x24cm and has 165 pages in Spanish and English.
The postcards are exclusively for patrons, and they have a private photo of someone in Andalusia. An unknown person sharing a personal moment of their lives with you.
Viñedos Verticales is the personal project of Vicente Inat and Juan Muñoz in Axarquía (Málaga). This is a wine region with extraordinarily steep slopes, where the sweet wines of Malaga are made, and the only raisins in the world with Designation of Origin. Vicente and Juan make wines that break from tradition and promote the wealth of this special place. They still use mules to harvest the grapes! They don’t offer official visits, so this is a unique offer.
Tierra de Arcillas is a ceramic project run by Julia and Milena in Almería. All their products are made using local clay that they personally collect and process by hand. The cup is made from marl clay. Historically, children made their own marbles from this clay, which they heated in the fire and then played with until they broke. Their work uses simple shapes, because they want to give centre stage to the different types of clay that they use.

Who is behind Marisma?
The idea for Marisma comes from Ana Fernández: I went to the Canaries with a paper travel guide and I was disappointed to discover that it didn’t represent the energy of the islands. It made me think that guide books should also include a sensitive, human and emotional perspective of the place.
My career is in gastronomy and tourism, but I’m discovering that I love writing and interviewing people.
The articles in this first issue include texts I have written myself, interviews and collaborations. It has also been possible thanks to the work of Cristina Gálvez , who proofread the texts, Patrick Jones, who translated them into English, and Tiquismiquis club who have worked wonders to convert a word document into a genuine magazine.
Future
I’d like Marisma to travel around other regions of Spain and even abroad, and to make open calls for future issues, so that anybody can share an intimate vision of their cultural reality.
Where Your Contributions Go
We need €4.500 to print the magazine and cover the costs for rewards and Verkami. If we surpass this goal then the extra funds could contribute towards costs for graphic design, printing extra copies, and/or organising promotional events to take Marisma to the end of the world, and beyond!
Timetable
We would send you the magazine and rewards once the crowdfunding has finished and we achieved our funding goal. We would need around a month from the end of the crowdfunding to print the magazine, produce your clay cups and send them. This could be for around the middle of December. In any case, we would be in contact via email to keep you updated on the process and times for delivery.
More Info
For the moment, you can learn a bit more about Marisma on Instagram.
We'll soon have a website too, where you'll also be able to purchase the magazine once it's been printed.
