The director, Carlota Paredes, sets the beginning of her career with her first short film, "By the Coast" (Bajo la Bruma) after debuting in theatres with a production of El Enredo.

The crew is composed of young galician filmmakers who, in its majority, study Audiovisual Communication in Santiago de Compostela and who seek to get into the film industry.

WHAT IS BY THE COAST ABOUT?

“By the Coast” is a drama that summerges us deep into Virginia and Minerva's story, two women who portrait an honest depiction of how certain relationships canimpact us for eternity without the need for big gestures of affection nor explanations because human relationships don't always need nor have predictible structures.

The short film belongs to the coming of age genre. The story focuses on the concept of the transient and fugacious seen through the relationship of Virginia and Minerva, who maintain a strong bond but at the same time being painfully aware that their relationship can fade away at any time.

WHY SHOULD YOU SUPPORT BY THE COAST?

Apart from being a short film, "By the Coast" is the effort of a young group of university students driven by creation, creativity and the art form. Supporting the project is betting on authorial, emerging, authentic cinema... of new filmmakers who believe in the power of art and the connection that arises from it. Every contribution is a support for the possibility of a wider culture in which the talents of those who believe with conviction that stories deserve to be told can see the day of light.

“By the Coast” accompanies the viewer from an intimate narration, built through sensoriality, the dreamlike and human depth.. In this project, sensitivity and delicacy invite us to consider what will remain or simply be diluted by the mist.

Your help and support will allow us to make this project reality with the means that its very nature demands. Funding this project is to be on the side of a committed and ambitious cinema that can go far beyond.

WHY DO WE NEED YOUR CONTRIBUTION?

To materialize this idea we need a budget estimated around €490 which will be used to cover the production costs: transport, diets and characterization. Through the campaign and, of course, your help, we intend to obtain the funding to make this project true.

ESTIMATED TIMELINE

PRODUCTION

The pre-production covers from January 2025 to June 2025. In this process we consolidated our technical and artistic team and began the characterization of the cast, search for locations, multiple meetings and rehearsals, all a fundamental part to create a good product.

Filming will take place in mid-June 2025 and post-production will run throughout the summer, ending in early September. Therefore, the delivery of rewards will be estimated to be sent around the month of september 2025.

DISTRIBUTION

Geographically, our story is set in Galiza, with the coast of A Coruña being especially recognizable. This way, the bond with the Galician spectator will be one of the strongest. The national and international scope will also be encompassed, avoiding the stagnation of distribution of a single place, because as the idea of the project itself indicates: it is a story about anyone, in any place and at any time.

The premiere will commence its journey throughout festivals of an independent, university, feminist and LGBTQ+ nature and we expect it to be distributed by film clubs, associations, universities..., focusing on Galicia and, specifically, Santiago de Compostela given its cultural environment. Later, we will cover different regions of the national level through the same means and their corresponding contests.

VISION

By the Coast's script is written in a pretty human and almost dreamlike style. If we were to talk about references it'd be indispensable to mention films such as “Persona” from Ingmar Bergman, "Mirror" from Andrei Tarkovsky, and books such as the novel “White Nights” written by Fyodor Dostoyevski, due to their fleeting and evanescent settings, their dreamlike statements and the sensation of lack of tangibility that relate the ambiguity between the relationship between two people.

But its value doesn't just come from the unconventional and non-linear narrative but also by the fact that in a time where queer represantation is stagnant in a perspective ruled mostly by homosexual men and gay couples, it's more relevant than ever to bet on women's perspective, women spaces and lesbian couples to come to fruition in the film industry.

THEMES AND VALUES

Our target audience is made up of young adults who love independent cinema, narratives that are as silent as they are complex and, fundamentally, who value the invitation to reflection offered by viewing.

The film especially connects with a queer female audience that is looking for authentic content in which to reflect themselves, as well as with those who are attracted to atmospheric stories and the explorations of themes such as loss, desire, memory and identity from an emotionally fragmented perspective.

WHO ARE WE?

The project arose under the gaze of Carlota Paredes, director and screenwriter of the idea, a student of Audiovisual Communication determined to take the step into the audiovisual sector.

With the production of Andrew F. Pardo, with whom he collaborates in the theater company El Enredo, the search for a talented team that has allowed the solidity of "By the Coast".
