8 MINUTES TO THE END OF THE WORLD

Written and Directed by: Jorge TABOADA

Produced by: NoData Productions

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

Primarily towards distribution and post-production expenses, as all costs for filming and pre-production have already been covered.

WHAT IS THE SHORT FILM ABOUT?

In 8 Minutes to the End of the World, we follow Marcos, a 23-year-old who lives with his roommate Lucas, as he plans to propose to his girlfriend of 8 months, Lucía. However, this action will lead to terrible consequences for humanity, culminating in the mass extinction of the planet, or in other words, THE END OF THE WORLD.

"Marcos, are you sure you want to propose to Lucía?"

DIRECTOR'S OBJECTIVES

  • TONE

The short film is an absurd comedy, featuring humor derived from awkward situations in the style of The Office. It also falls into the Science Fiction/Fantasy category.

Maybe this isn't the best time…

  • PACE

The short film has a frantic pace, with constant jumps in time. Every time the scene changes, a countdown appears at the bottom of the screen showing how much time is left until the end of the world: 30 Years to the End of the World, 10 Days to the End of the World, or 8 MINUTES TO THE END OF THE WORLD, which is when the dinner where Marcos plans to propose begins.

  • COLOR

Color plays a crucial role in this work: each character is represented by a specific color, with *yellow *(the color of Marcos, the protagonist) being the most dominant, as the story is seen through Marcos's perspective.

Additionally, other colors like red and blue also feature prominently throughout the film, representing the other main characters.

  • POINT OF VIEW

As mentioned previously, Marcos is the absolute master of the short film. This extends to the point where, viewing everything from his perspective, he alters the past to his liking, leaving the audience in constant doubt about what has been changed by Marcos and what is completely real.

His world, his rules

  • LOVE

It is present throughout the short film and is the cornerstone of the story. From the most obvious (Marcos wanting to get married) to the deepest (the abandonment of Marcos's father when he was young), although the most important is the relationship of friendship between Marcos and Lucas, which has a nearly fraternal chemistry. Like real-life love, it will not last forever...

Though the story may initially seem complex, it is as simple as saying that it relates THE END OF LOVE TO THE END OF THE WORLD, placing them on the same level of importance.

  • INSPIRATIONS

The most important influence is undoubtedly the filmography of Edgar Wright, as the short film aims for a frenetic editing style with constant and meticulously timed camera movements, similar to those of the British director.

Among his films, the greatest inspiration is Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, especially in the portrayal of the friendship between the two roommates.

Also look for the chaos and surrealism of Everything Everywhere All At Once, which is another story that explores love through fantasy.

As mentioned earlier, the humor of The Office is embedded in the film, creating completely awkward situations with a more free-flowing camera. This gives us comedic moments that make the viewer think, "I hope I never have to experience this situation."

Another major inspiration is How I Met Your Mother. The theme of searching for love, the constant flashbacks, and even the characters (which I will elaborate on in the next section) draw inspiration from the famous American series.

  • CHARACTERS

- MARCOS

He is a blend of Barney's spontaneity, charisma, and issues with facing reality, combined with Ted's compulsive romanticism and belief in destiny (both characters from How I Met Your Mother). His color is yellow.

He is 23 years old and has no future plans other than getting married. This goal is his shield to avoid confronting the emptiness in his heart caused by his father's abandonment.

He has a deep friendship with Lucas, who is his roommate.

- LUCAS

He represents the head, logic, and coherence of this pair of friends, advising Marcos not to marry Lucía. He deeply values Marcos and is concerned for him.

Lucas is a methodical and calculating character, yet also charismatic. He always wears a bow tie. His color is red.

Additionally, he hides a crucial secret for the future of the planet.

- LUCÍA

While the two roommates might be considered to live in "their own world," Lucía is the most grounded and realistic. She is not very affectionate and is reluctant to commit to anything serious. Additionally, she has family issues that contribute to her emotional struggles.

Lucía represents how it would be if the viewer entered the story, evoking sympathy and a sense of identification. Her color is blue.
