"Luzada" forms the fourth album of Galician drummer and composer Iago Fernández in the role of bandleader. The ten compositions, nine by Fernández and one by his "musical brother" Xan Campos, contain numerous musical sources of inspiration - from jazz to Radiohead and classical music to folk music from Brazil and Galicia. Furthermore, "Luzada" is probably the most personal work of the Swiss-based drummer to date.
The emotional inspiration to write this music is linked to my inner healing process. In 2019, I started to deeply process traumas from my childhood in therapies and to regularly practice yoga as well as meditation. -Iago Fernández
"Luzada" translates to "light emitted by a body, either its own or reflected", but also to "the first light of the day, when the sun rises". The term itself comes from Galicia, an autonomous region in northwestern Spain, where Fernández is from. He also wrote two poems in his native Galician language, which are featured on the album: "Almas Viaxeiras" ("Traveling Souls") describes the longing for physical closeness, but at the same time the connection between two souls who inevitably could not see each other during the pandemic. The other work is called "Flor Esvelta" ("Slender Flower").
"Flor Esvelta" is about spiritual healing, growth and maturity in a very metaphorical way. It's about people I knew well, myself, and the emotional suffering of society, but with a message of acceptance and optimism. -Iago Fernández
The decision of the band line-up further influenced the composition process because of the instruments and the unique style of all the musicians involved. For example, the piece "Doces" (Galician for "twelves" and "sweets") began as a twelve-tone melody and was inspired by the American saxophonist Mark Turner, who plays on "Luzada." The other musicians are Joris Roelofs (bcl), David Virelles (p), Ben Street (b) and Iago Fernández (dr, voc, keys, perc). In addition, there are selected guests, namely Yumi Ito (voc), Song Yi Jeon (voc), Wilfried Wilde (g), Sam Barnett (sax) and Kuba Dworak (b). The record was recorded in the studio of Jazzcampus Basel by Daniel Somaroo; for mixing & mastering Sam Barnett and Mário Barreiros were responsible respectively. "Luzada" will be released by the well-known label "Fresh Sound Records".
