PIRENAICA photobook

And if we succeed, and that's why I'm counting on your help to reach more people, I'll raffle a 30x45cm high quality paper copy of the PIRENAICA photograph of your choice among all the ones in the photobook. Shall we try?

PIRENAICA is a journey to the wild essence of the Pyrenees, to the relationship between man, understood as a human being, and the mountain. Of the mark left by one on the other and how the latter impregnates the former. A personal vision that takes shape with this photobook, designed by the Underbau studio, with photographs taken over the last fourteen years in different corners of the Catalan Pyrenees.

The photobook

• 112-page book with 50 colour photographs.

• Paperback binding with browband and high quality printing.

• Slightly square, measuring 22.5 x 27.6 cm.

• Three types of paper that give it an organic appearance. On the inside, 100% natural fibre paper and off-white paper with different weights for photos and text. For the covers and the initial pages, which make up a prologue-booklet, green natural fibre wild paper.

• Each image is boxed alone on each double page to emphasise the idea of silence and solitude. The latter moves on the white of the page (in different positions) to evoke the wandering through an immense uninhabited territory.

Collaborations

PIRENAICA begins with a verse by the Galician poet Gonzalo Hermo from his collection of poems ‘La vida salvatge’ (Godall edicions, 2019), translated into Catalan by himself. Hermo won the (Spain) National Prize for Young Poetry in 2015.

It also includes an epilogue by Vanesa Freixa, co-director of the documentary ‘El no a l'ós' ('No to the bear’), illustrator, rural activist from the Pyrenees and author of the book ‘Ruralisme. La lluita per una vida millor’ (Ruralism, the struggle for a better life)(Ara Llibres, 2023).

The design has been done by the renowned studio Underbau, specialised in photobooks. And I have had the help, as far as editing is concerned, of Àlex Llovet, author and editor of the photobook publishing house Ediciones Posibles.

About the rewards

The rewards range from a symbolic Blade of grass of 10€ for those who want to lend a hand without buying the book, the necessary Rain, of 30€ to obtain a copy and the Tree where, in addition to the book, you can choose 1 copy from among 6 images of the work, to the 800€ reward plus Wild, which consists of a book and all the images printed to measure 18x24cm on high quality paper. And, in the middle, a whole fan that you can see on the side, well explained.

Once the Verkami campaign is over, the subsequent selling price (RRP) of PIRENAICA will be 35€.

The 6 images from which you will be able to choose one for the Tree and River rewards are the following and later you will have to specify which one/s, identifying it with the names: Roca, Boletaire, Llenya, Tapaculs, Urpes or Gravat. (In the reading direction, from left to right and from top to bottom)

Who I am

My name is Oriol Clavera and I am a freelance photographer with 25 years of going from one place to another with my camera. I am passionate about photojournalism and nature photography, portraying the rural world and its people.

I have published my work in magazines such as Descobrir, Arrels, GEO, Magazine de La Vanguardia, El País Semanal, Gara, Berria, El Periódico de Catalunya, Nació Digital, De Standaard, Pyrénées Magazine and many more. I have won several prizes, the most recent being the Pica d'Estats Prize (2024).

I have also made long-term photographic works of which I highlight ‘Temporada baixa’, a reflection on the model of urban development around tourism along catalan coastline, ‘Glosadors’, which portrays glosa singers from different parts of the Catalan Countries, and ‘Transhumancia’, on the routes still taken by shepherds of sheep, cows and horses, recently acquired by the Pla Nacional de Fotografia de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

PIRENAICA is another of these projects that I started almost 15 years ago and now I am presenting it to you to materialise it in book format.

What will your contributions be used for?

The contribution you make to the project will be used to cover the costs of printing the book, shipping and rewards.

Planned timetable

The edition and design of the photobook are already done. If the Verkami campaign allows it, I will print PIRENAICA with a print run of 300 copies. If I exceed the initial target sufficiently, I will be able to print a larger number of copies.

The forecast is that you can have it in your hands before the end of the year.
