Makuyu

When we are far from the limits of Africa we speak of Kenya, in our mind we conjure up safaris, luxurious hotels or paradisiacal beaches.

To visit Kenya is to test a few meters of lions or to live with tribes, that now far from their origins they live of the tourism.

This idyllic image of Kenya coexists with a very different one. No frills, no beaches, no tourism.

The high birth rate, AIDS and other diseases. Along with famines generated by repeated droughts, they have limited the economic conditions of thousands of families, who are forced to abandon their children. All this, together with the government's unwillingness to attend to this uprooted childhood, causes hundreds of reception centers to be created by foreign private initiative.

MAKUYU

Makuyu is a village located in the region of central Kenya.

There is located a small center initiative committed to provide home to 15 children who are currently between 6 and 14 years old. The center children are orphaned or have single mothers who are struggling to provide for their families.

This initiative is part of an old school, which ended its activity and has been transformed into a non-profit organization.

The mission of Makuyu Education Initiative is to provide disadvantaged children the opportunity to escape the vicious circle of poverty by combating malnutrition and other obstacles that may prevent them from reaching their full potential.

The center is supported by donations through its website and volunteers.

In addition to the initiative of Pavel, who from his residence in the US, is committed from the beginning with the creation of the project.

Makuyu is a young organization, in which they live next with to the children two teachers are in charge of education and refresher classes, a cook and two securities.

It is a center with few resources that seeks to ensure a present and a future for children.

¿Who am I?

Xisco Navarro, a photographer who spent a three month stay doing a volunteering in the center of Makuyu.

During this time I also made a multimedia project (photography and video) based on the center, the children's lives, their emotions and their feelings.

Idea and purpose

The main idea as a photographer is to make a photo book about the project.

The photograph on paper has the great difference with respect to the digital one, that lasts in the time. It is a testimony of what has happened.

With this book published, the objective will be to return to the center and to deliver a copy to each child, so that in the future do not forget who were, and so they can help other children in the same situation.

Why participate in the project?

1. Because some children wake up every morning with the hope that one day their lives changed, and they wish it to continue.

2. Support small projects with low economic resources and that today are possible thanks to the support of people like you.

3. Discover a different Kenya, with another look through the eyes of a professional photographer and his own experience.

Destination of contributions

Your contributions will go to photo book production, mailings and money collection for Makuyu Education Initiative.

As I said before, Makuyu is a young organization, that is growing up and any help is welcome.

Grid cap and adjustable size with front print of the logo and children's name of the center.

20x25 photograph unpublished in the project.

Photo book about the project, numbered and limited edition.

It also includes the children's story, portraits, work pictures and children's drawings.

Texts in English and Spanish.

Possibility of including in the book a promotion logo as sponsor of the project.

Delivery by the author in the presentation of the book in Valencia.

Depending the number of patrons and their location the delivery in different cities of Spain will be valued.
