What is Ringo?
Ringo is a short fiction film born as a Graduation Project from ESCAC (Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya).
It will have a runtime of about 15 minutes, and it will be shot in 12 days in Barcelona and Liverpool.
Plot
Irene is a teenager who lives with her mother, Pilar, and her grandma, María, in a flat in a humble neighborhood. One day, María begins to behave strangely: she seems much happier than usual, makes a lot of jokes and tells weird stories of youth about rock tours, excesses and groupies... Until she finally declares: “I’m Ringo Starr”.
Concerned, Pilar and Irene take her to the doctor, who says without hesitation that María is suffering from dementia. But Irene refuses to believe that her grandma has lost her mind, and she soon begins to see signs that lead her to seriously consider: is it possible that the spirit of Ringo Starr has possessed an octogenarian grandmother?
Why?
“I was listening to Abbey Road and thinking about my grandma...” -declares the director with a smile on his face while he bends his body in seductive attitude- “...that’s how I came up with the idea of grandma Ringo”. The girl instinctively grabs her purse with both hands and, hesitant, looks at her friend, who asks her: “do you know him?”; to which she replies shaking her head and getting up from the chair. “Let’s go”. So both tourists hurriedly leave the table and the bar, and our director remains there alone in front of a plate of olives and two half-full glasses of a dark substance. He grabs a glass without hesitation and takes a swig, followed by an unavoidable sneer. “Yuck, I hate vermouth so much...”. He takes another swig.
And maybe stimulated by the bitter elixir, the young filmmaker begins to reflect on the true and deep reasons for making his project. With Ringo, he wants to pay tribute to Ringo Starr himself, but he also wants to honor the grandmas and all women in general. He wants to make a Spanish film, showing the everyday urban life of regular people, but he also wants to break it with the arrival of an absurdly out of the ordinary event. He suddenly sees it all clear. He leaves the cup on the table, gets up excited and starts heading towards the exit. “Contrast. That’s the key. Funny but tragic. Bittersweet like vermouth. Sober and crazy, British and Spanish. Flamenco and rock and roll...”. His stream of thought is suddenly interrupted when he feels a hand tapping his shoulder. He turns around and sees the waiter, who has had to leave the bar to go after him. Apparently, those tourists hadn’t paid the bill.
