We are two filmmakers and documentary film teachers:
Alejandro Alarcón (Mexican) and Alex Campos (Spanish)
We have made two documentaries about the indigenous people of northern Mexico.
**Wixáritari is how they are called, they are known by others as Huichol.
Perhaps in relation to huachichiles, an ancient group inhabiting the central highlands of Mexico**.
One of the most preserved cultures of Mesoamerica, the Wixárika, has adapted to the changes, but as in all modern societies, now is confronting with a huge challenge for survival.
There are over 50 thousand and they live in Nayarit, Zacatecas, Durango and Jalisco states-México.
The first documentary was made from a long relationship with one of the communities, documenting the cycle of pilgrimages and ceremonial dance co
Hein + tsika Tuutu - The flower´s dream.
From a ceremony that gathered several communities in struggle to defend their sacred land and cosmology (threatened by the mining industry) comes the second documentary, called
Kawito tatei nierika - Singing to the depths of the Earth
What will be the "WIRRA Tour"
A trip - encounter through what they call the nierika - vision
A time to see them, filming and being filmed, along with their traditions and language.
We want to return to the inhabitants of these mountains and canyons, pilgrims of The Encinos, San Andrés Coamiata, Mezquitic, Jalisco, ... their images, imagination, reflection of our meetings.
In times of technological revolution, we want to share with them, not just the finished work, but also the process of creating, knowledge and ways of seeing the world. A way to acknowledge and recognize each other.
Grow and coexist in respect, freedom and mutual learning.
Create together in equality.
In which way?
Showing the documentaries
We will project the two documentaries made in the holy land where it was filmed and in their communities, with post-screening discussions.
Workshops on documentary film
For the communities to find their way to audiovisual expresion, creating a film on their own, from within.
A collective gaze that can be assumed as a social engine for the expression of their communities.
It recently emerged in communities the urgency to communicate to the world, now that they are threatened by the mining industries, that want to destroy their holy sites.
We will make workshops in the Wirikuta desert, sacred place where they pilgrim each year, and in their communities, where we will propose workshops for all ages and genders.
Making a documentary Off Road - Making Off
We will create a documentary of the whole process, starting with the first trip to Europe of Urratiqui, Marakame (shaman) healer, craftsman, musician and one of the leading caracters on the documentary "The flower´s dream"
For thousands of years this culture has done the pilgrimage to their holy place, Wirikuta, where the world was born.
Today, mining threatens this desert, in the state of San Luis Potosi.
But this struggle is not just against mining, but also for their traditions, beliefs, rituals and culture. On behalf of the land.
This work is for the living treasure that is the cycle of pilgrimages and prayers that practice the Wixarikas, with the sole purpose of holding the spirit of life.
So as to understand the importance of their cosmology, connected to nature in a way that many cultures have forgotten.
They carry a lifetime ancestral culture, full of wisdom, a wisdom that is difficult to understand if there isn´t a cultural bridge, with which we are working through these films, workshops and accompanying them on their way, which also is ours.
The Amazonia, considered the lungs of the earth, is already destroyed.
Wirikuta is considered the navel of the earth, and although it may seem mystical, it is not, these places are vital to this planet for its natural and ancestral wealth. Our awareness of this may provide a possible alternative to the destruction of which we are responsible as a specie. Being aware that if we do not keep a balance we are catapulting to the total destruction, including humans everywhere.
If you support this project you will be creating the possibility for the Wixarika to express themselves. You'll be helping to complete this cultural bridge, which is urgently needed to defend this reality and the nature that depends on it, on which we all depend on.
Listening is sometimes the best step that can be made
