The Certamen Coreográfico de Madrid, founded in 1987 by Paso a 2, is an annual platform for new work in contemporary dance. It was created to offer support to choreographers at a key point in their professional development.

What began as a choreography competition is now a powerful catalyst that sets its prizewinners in motion throughout the entire year. During the past 25 years we have been instrumental in promoting over 300 choreographers, including several who have gone on to receive National Dance Awards from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and 900 dancers.

The Certamen and its network of collaborators in Spain, Europe and the U.S. offers infrastructures, programming, training and mentoring within the framework of a unique initiative that has been instrumental in making the Spanish contemporary dance scene what it is today. In 2011 the Certamen received the prestigious Premio MAX de Nuevas Tendencias (MAX Prize for Cutting-Edge Work) in recognition of its “outstanding role in the development of contemporary choreography in Spain”.

THE XXV CERTAMEN COREOGRÁFICO DE MADRID - HOW IT WORKS AND THIS YEAR'S DATES

Teatro Fernán Gómez – 1-4 December 2011

The Certamen opens its call for applications in late June. Choreographers who wish to participate send a DVD of the entire work (maximum length 15 minutes). The Certamen is open to all Spanish choreographers and to international choreographers who live and work in Spain. The work must have been made in the current year or be a première. The Certamen does not accept solos.

Up to 14 choreographies are chosen each year to be presented at the Teatro Fernán Gómez Centro de Arte in Madrid during the first two days of the Certamen. An international jury chooses the finalists, who perform on the third day, when the prizes are awarded. Winning choreographies and previous prizewinners with new works perform on the fourth and final day at the theatre. All performances are open to the public.

The Certamen and many of its adjunct activities such as our Workshop, ChoreoRoam Europe, and the dance/journalism projects Palabras en Movimiento (Moving Words), take place during one week, this year from December 1st – 4th . Our prizes, which include residencies for making new work, scholarships and performing opportunities, set things in motion for Certamen participants during the entire year. Winning a prize at the Certamen can truly change a choreographer´s prospects for the coming year and open important doors for future development.

WHAT DO WE WANT TO FINANCE THROUGH VERKAMI?

The current economic situation in Spain has resulted in cutbacks in some of our institutional support and the Certamen´s future is at stake. We are working to generate new sources of support for upcoming editions.

The Certamen gives out many prizes, some of them cash and others in the form of residencies, scholarships and performances in collaboration with other projects here and abroad. This year we have committed to maintaining our financial participation in those prizes that involve other organizations because they generate new resources for choreographers and support our partners in their own projects.

In our call for applications we advised participants that we were still working to find financial support for the cash prizes. We want to generate funds through Verkami to cover our First Prize, which is always important, but even moreso on our 25th anniversary and in the midst of great changes in support structures for the arts.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND YOUR SUPPORT!
