SYNOPSIS
During the student protests in Chile, schoolboys took over one of the capital city’s flagship high schools, the Dario Salas. The film portrays the political and social evolution of the country through the daily events of students who spend more than 6 months locked up in protests.
ON THE POLITICAL AND SOCIAL SITUATION
Different social movements that originated in the so-called Arab spring of 2011 have made for a particularly rebellious year. Citizens’ disappointment, whether young people or not, in Europe and later in America share a common denominator of disappointment and anger with the economic system and the political establishment.
For that and other reasons, much of the world's attention is focused on this part of the planet.
Chile, as a political and social system, took years to be the ideal paradigm for many Latin American societies, but these revolts put into question these strict neo-liberal systems.
Chile is the country with the highest tuition fees in the world and is also the fifth most unequal country in the distribution of wealth. The education system, students say, perpetuates and accentuates the economical gap
ABOUT THE FILM
Dario Rebel is a documentary focusing on the student demonstrations being carried out in Chile and these demonstrations are the most substantial since the establishment of democracy. The film takes place entirely within one of the most representative schools of the capital, the Dario Salas High School and shows one of the most representative industrialized actions, where students are locked in protest against poor education and the profits derived from it. The youth of Dario Salas were determined to start a hunger strike which has lasted longer than 6 months. Although this hunger strike has not been the only of its kind, it has been the longest in the history of the country. The media coverage around this event has been high profile in nature and very visible.
The premise of the movie is to follow the students without leaving the premises and revolves around four concepts: the daily happenings of the youth at the High School; the importance of social networks; political, social and cultural developments that took place in the high schools (concerts, meetings, workshops, artistic and cultural, etc...); and the hunger strike itself. All this makes the Darío Salas High School a very special event through which one can project the entire political and social reality being experienced by the country.
