Latcho Drom means "good luck and good journey" in Romany.
Latcho Drom is a project which aims to photograph the life and migration of gypsy musicians from countries such as Spain, France, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey and India.
The idea is to capture the essence of the gypsy culture via a journey through space and time, through the culture and above all, the music as a means of expression, as a historical legacy, as a unifying identity, and its best known contribution to the world. From Andalusia to Rajasthan – from where their journey began in the 10th century, this photographic journey aims, through music, to show the reality of 12 million people who still suffer marginalisation and persecution. This project’s aim is to depict how their music, through photography, is not merely a spectacle but also an integral part of their oral culture; a unifying element and way of expression.
THE PROJECT
The journey begins with the Spanish gypsies, passing to the French Manouches, to the **Tsiganies* in Central Europe, crossing Turkey to arrive at the root: Rajastan (India)
12 million people (the largest ethnic majority in Europe) who fight for the right to continue to live as they always have; a culture unknown and stigmatised by society.
8 ethnocultures united by a nomadic way of life, and by an ancestral way of conveying their history:: music.
Our final aim is to create a book which we hope to publish and share with those who defend gypsy culture.
WHY I ASK FOR YOUR COLLABORATION
The money I raise will be destined to cover travel expenses in order to finish the project (1,300€) and the publishing of 100 copies of the book (2,500€).
