What is it about?
STATE OF MIND is a personal project that takes the form of a fanzine to speak openly about mental health. We do this with words, illustrations, and a lot of commitment.
This publication is born with a clear objective: to contribute to breaking the stigma. Because talking about mental health is a powerful tool to combat misinformation, dismantle stereotypes, and question harmful beliefs.
In STATE OF MIND, you will find verified and accessible content that aims to accompany, raise awareness, and help better understand realities that are often difficult to put into words.
This fanzine wants to be a grain of sand, yes. But also a call: for a freer, more empathetic, and inclusive society.
What is the goal of this campaign?
With this publication, we want to create a community of people interested in delving into mental health, through rigorous information from expert sources, real-life stories, and a fresh, committed, and critically-minded fanzine.
What does this fanzine offer you?
✅ It helps you better understand the processes of stigmatization
✅ It teaches you to use a more inclusive language
✅ It offers you tools to support people with mental health issues
✅ It connects you with references and resources from expert organizations
What will we find in “Stigma”?
The first issue of the fanzine STATE OF MIND, with 20 pages, combines varied content with a critical and creative perspective on mental health:
• Illustrations and comics featuring characters with mental health experiences
• Academic content, with references like Erving Goffman and Graham Thornicroft
• Analysis of real cases, such as the example from Girona (pages 16–17)
• Practical tools to break the stigma, like the 9 tips from NAMI (page 15)
• The activity “What’s Cooking?”, to detect and respond to stereotypes through provocative characters (page 18)
A fanzine to think, question, and act
Why is this project important?
According to the WHO, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime. Yet, we continue to carry silences, prejudices, and lack of resources.
✔ 50% of people don’t seek help for fear of stigma
✔ Media continue to reproduce harmful stereotypes
✔ Social understanding is limited, and resources are often insufficient
This fanzine aims to shed light on this. **To break the taboo, to network, to transform perspectives.
**
Contents
Each issue includes two fixed sections:
• The comic of Mark, Ian, and Luke, depicting the daily life of these three characters
• “What’s Cooking?”, an activity that helps you reflect and closes the fanzine
Additionally, you will find interviews and varied content related to mental health, to delve deeper and understand different perspectives.
Next, a glimpse of the content in the upcoming issues:
We’ll talk about unwanted loneliness, depression, the importance of our environment, how to ask for help, and how to improve our mental health.
As part of World Mental Health Day, we’ll talk about the importance of mental health. We’ll also visit the Pere Mata Institute to learn what a psychiatric hospital admission is like, aiming to break the stigma surrounding psychiatric centers.
Christmas is a holiday that affects the mental health of many people. Let’s take a look at why, and what we can do to combat the discomfort. We’ll talk about stress and anxiety disorders, and we’ll also explore the concept of grief. We’ll also discuss how music therapy can support mental health.
We will talk about how addictions affect mental health. We will interview a member of the Addictions and Mental Health medical team at Sant Joan Hospital in Reus.
We will take a closer look at interpersonal relationships and mental health. We will revisit the concept of stigma **to understand how it affects us **in the workplace and at school. And we will interview someone who will share their personal experience with mental health, their relationships with others...
