Hello

In these pandemic months I have documented stories that I want to be recorded and disseminated despite the extremely precarious situations of the journalistic, cultural and information sector.

I need you to help me carry out this project. The goal of this crowdfunding campaign is to gather enough to create the photographic exhibition entitled Urban scars under the mask, a proposal already selected to be exhibited in the International Biennial of Photography Olot from 31 July to 29 August 2020

WHAT

Urban scars under the mask is the title of a photojournalistic research on covid and the values of neoliberalism in times of gentrification, of freedom linked to a feeling of fear and full of bad bugs and negative influences. It is also a vision of the misfits, those antiheroes who thanks to not getting lost marked the path of solidarity but because these stories can be told now you have to keep an eye on the rewards, I hope you like them.

WHEN

From the beginning of the confinement by Covid-19. The work is concentrated in Hospitalet de Llobregat in the context of the events of the daily news and at the same time evolves into a participatory and author documentary project

WHY

This project was born out of the need to respond to the political incapacity of Europe, to the institutional censorship and infantilization that we have suffered as photojournalists in these months. It is a deep documentation of the pandemic. It is a reaction to the imprecise treatment of the international press, of the good and the generous not visible. It also observes the cracks of neoliberalism and wants to toast for those who left and also for those who are born. Potential patrons allow moving forward with these investigations. Reflecting for the public in a free and independent way will be our victory

What will I use your contributions to?

The amount raised through this campaign will go entirely to pay the printings and production costs of the photographs included in the exhibitions and the cost of the rewards to the patrons.

What is the Olot International Biennial of Photography?

The Olot Biennial is the place where sharing it thanks to whoever creates photographic images, Spanish and international photography, long-standing professionals, and emerging artists come together to share, discuss and show images about the world we live in, and I hope, how to transform it.

FAQ

  • What is the work about?

"Urban scars under the mask" is a photojournalistic and in-progress documentary work carried out in Spain following the stories and visions of COVID 19 in the city of Hospitalet de Llobregat, from the beginning of confinement, as experienced through my photographs and trying to show the collateral impact of gentrification that generates conflicts and "direct" resilience.

The history of the pandemic period, the impulses, the enthusiasms, the hopes of the best part of the peoples, have been erased and mystified by fake news, the scarce resources of the mass media, far from reality and manipulated by hidden powers, for corruption, theft of public property, lack of efficiency, social injustice and private property, which, in addition to being the basis of civilization, is also a kind of moral dam, "the only solution discovered so far by men to solve the problem of reconciling individual freedom with the absence of borders "according to what Von Hayek writes.

In this perspective, the work of photojournalism assumes a new dimension. It is not only a question of making a historical record with an ideal and generous commitment to fight disinformation for a better world or for truth but of the logical consequence of a lucid analysis that allows us to focus on the fatal errors of the contemporary world and the unstoppable degeneration of the forms of bourgeois rule. I have chosen to treat this report like this. In the gonzo style of new journalism and having a critical and firm position on neoliberalism. It would be nice to be able to say that it's like when you understand the meaning of a movie in the last five minutes, but unfortunately, it must be admitted that this movie has been going on for at least forty years, and in my opinion, it's still a long way from the conclusion.

L'Hospitalet de Llobregat is an industrial suburb in the southwest of Barcelona, one of the most densely populated cities in the European Union. It extends from the Marina mountains to the coastal delta of the Llobregat river, in an official union of adjacent cities and municipalities called Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB). In addition to the proximity to mighty Barcelona and the Barça temple, it is a particularly well-connected district, with two metro stops, one at each end. "The residents expelled by the gentrification of Barcelona arrived here and now, at the end of their current rental contracts, they see with concern that the situation is repeating and they may also be expelled from L'Hospitalet."

It was once populated by waves of southern Spanish workers who were partially replaced by other citizens who came from around the world but with the common denominator of their low income. Today, a slight majority of the city's residential population is originally from Catalonia and more than 22% of the city's inhabitants were born outside of Spain (mainly in Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, and Morocco). Several urban interventions have allowed the construction of buildings with a large number of new or renovated homes in declining or deteriorated urban spaces, leading to an increase in apartment rentals in the area and the expulsion of the less wealthy who cannot pay those prices, replaced by those with more purchasing power.

Experts predict that the city will change habitats, transforming itself environmentally and socially by leaps and bounds. For people, the impact is no longer an abstract concern debated by politicians, worse still during a pandemic crisis. See how hospitals become more saturated and hotels become sick patient accommodation under their eyes. More than 3,000 houses are being built now and will be built in the next three years and living in a residential neighborhood is not the same as living in energy-poor, hard-working, overcrowded apartment blocks where the virus can spread between homes in a situation severe pandemic.

Although it is difficult to reverse gentrification, within the ascending blocks that will provide millionaire injections to municipal coffers, during the confinement due to COVID 19, resilience has been renewal, mutual support, and public services, all trying to preserve the habitat and homes. The hope is to raise awareness, as only the people save the people, to stop erosion with the determination to claim "a cozy neighborhood" and not a showcase for statistics, tourists, and private investors.
