Part I

In the past months the sunny, vibrant culture capital of southern Europe, Barcelona turned into a gray, mournful silhouette on the ocean's coast.

The feature documentary "La soledad de Gaudí" captures these historic moments and draws a poetic parallel between the city's struggles and its most renown architects life, Antoni Gaudí.

It is divided into two parts: Drama and Creativity.

Gaudí did not have an easy life. This involves the early death of close family members, a time of isolation at home from other kids due to a chronic illness. A history of unreciprocated love which lasted until his last days when he got hit by a train. As he was mistaken for a beggar, he did not receive necessary assistance and died as a result of this accident.

The film goes on to explore individuals of distinct socioeconomic backgrounds in Barcelona documenting their dramatic changes in life during this time. Their losses, isolation experiences and misfortunes.

One of the featured individuals is a homeless man sharing his existential fear he had on the street without any protection from this invisible virus. His only source of income: pedestrians, were now staying at home.

Part II

Gaudí's isolation experience turned out to be life changing, however.

He started exploring the complexity and beauty of the texture of a stone and the structure of a tree. This would inspire the essence of his future architectonic philosophy, as most of his building resemble natural shapes and structures.

Gaudi’s ideas in shape of architectonic creations and his aspirations of social justice in the 19th century are put in juxtaposition to current communities who are building new structures and creatively changing the city’s path for the better during this pandemic. This underlines Barcelona’s strong historic tendency to creatively innovate and adapt to new situations.

It will feature individuals and companies who are reacting to a collapsed health care system. Local communities “corona makers” gathering to produce medical material to fight the hospital's supply shortage and entrepreneurs giving new use to their machines to produce important tools to fight the virus.

One of them is David, owner of Fabcafé. With his 3D printing machines he and his team have produced thousands of face shields for different local hospitals.

Gaudí once said

“everything comes from the vast book of nature”

and

“There's no reason not to try something new just because nobody has tried it before.”

We are the architects of our lives and society. This international crisis might be a good chance to take a step back, reflect and consciously choose how we want to move on, socially, economically and ecologically.

Who is doing this project?

Tassilo Lopes Coelho is a German/ Portuguese Filmmaker and Photo-journalist. He has lived and worked in countries like Mozambique, Bolivia, US and Germany.

Throughout his travels he founded his production company Savanna films under which he has directed short films, branding videos, advertisements and covered live events.

Clients include a brands and individuals such across the world ranging from southern african superstar Deltino Guerreiro to the Swiss notorious longboard dancer Sven Schiefer.

In Mozambique he and other local filmmakers, actors and musicians worked with an Italian NGO at a prison, teaching the inmates creative skills as part of an art therapy program for a year.

He did a small successful crowdfunding campaign for the best musical student "John" in prison to finance him a guitar. Today John is free and making a living of his music.

In Zürich Tassilo worked with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) in the area of communication and fundraising.
