THE PROJECT
Our project is the recording on CD for the IBS Classical label of seven works for horn and piano, which we have commissioned from seven prestigious Spanish composers:
- Salvador Brotons / Miguel Bustamante / César Cano / Juan José Colomer / Miguel Ángel Tallante / Jose Luis Turina / Francisco Zacarés
Spreading music from today is undoubtfully a must for any committed musician. Furthermore, it is even more satisfying to successfully encourage composers to create new pieces for one’s own instrument, knowing that otherwise these works would very unlikely ever be born. As a performer, this is an ensured enriching and joyful experience.
When creating a new piece, the composer always will be in the need of a transmitter, whose job is to share the music with the audience. This creates a unique process in each interpretation, which will vary from concert to concert and from player to player. The actual magic of music making also shows how relevant the performers vision is in the whole process of music interpretation: it will always contain some personal insight.
In addition to the premiering of these pieces -the star moment for it is always in a concert with a real audience- we sometimes also have the privilege to give birth to a longer life for them by making and spreading a recording. Only then will these pieces be able to travel to many other composers and artist, and hopefully have a longer and well-known life as art pieces. This is the reason why Miriam and I are so interested not only in premiering new works, but also recording this wonderful creation process in order to capture its value.
Some premiering concerts have already taken place in great concerts halls such as Palau de la Música de Valencia or Auditorio Manuel de Falla de Granada, and others are still planned to happen. No less than that will be our recording label: IBS Classical, leaded by Paco Moya
PROJECT CONTENT
Briefly would like to stand out that each and every one of the seven composers taking part in the project has given out with enormous care the best of themselves as artist and musicians in a completely free task, excluding a reduced timing issue, as they will share the CD with other artists. Therefore, the outcome of this association is as diverse as the composers are among them, and we have been fascinated by every piece from its start, trying to give it shape with care and personal commitment both technically and artistically.
You can read complete and detailed information on each composer and his work at this link:
Miguel Bustamante was the first to conclude his piece, and keeps up with his unique original style throughout a piece which offers a nod to Carles Santos’s music-theatral work Tocatico-tocatá, originally for voice and piano. You can see here Carles Santos performing the original piece In Bustamante’s piece, “Juegos sobre Tocatico-tocatá", homenaje a Carles Santos”* we enjoy an effective and amusing scherzo, contrasted with a lyrical central theme.
José Luis Turina, as a close friend of Miriam puts one’s knowledge to practical use by using motifs from Liszt’s Consolation nº2 for piano solo, as this is the composer to whom Miriam can feel the closest as a musician and artist, and from whom she is a leading specialist. Turina’s Consolación is highly demanding, both technically and musically and alternates between lyrical themes and very effective rytmical scherzos.
Salvador Brotons, with whom I’ve been privileged to share many musical experiences highlighting the premiere of his Horn Concerto Ab Origine, did not hesitate to give off his endless creativity writing “Introducció i Galop”. He is able to explore and combine the horn’s resources and technical possibilities as very few could.
I’ve shared a long relationship with César Cano since I had de privilege of premiering his Trio for clarinet, french horn and piano. He now offers us “Tientos para la trompa alada”, which may be one of the most demanding pieces Miriam and I have faced in our entire career. It is an extremely effective work for the listener, written as a triptych with the traditional fast-slow-fast structure.
Francisco Zacarés presents a very personal language in “Cantus Horn”, a piece that only is characteristically defining for its Allegro Sonata form, as a new singing idea for the horn. He sets two contrasting motifs against each other, which will be re-exposed before the final coda after a very slow and contrasting middle section.
The two remaining pieces on the CD: Elegía by Miguel Ángel Tallante and Mar sin Luna by Juanjo Colomer are the closest to my personal emotional insight, and were commissioned to them thanks to the intimate friendship between us.
Juanjo and I were fellow at the foundation of the Spanish National Youth Orchestra back in 1983, and have worked together later premiering Visions for Horn and Piano and his splendid concert for Horn and Orchestra Naturaleza Humana. Miguel Ángel and I have shared many great experiences playing together, particularly as Early Music performers.
I have enormous gratitude to them both for composing a piece in remembrance of my son Javier Bonet Silvestre, who left us when this project was already getting started.
Mar sin Luna and Elegía are both slow and intimate works written in one single movement, with a profound and harrowing expression just as life also represents. In their works they employ variously thematic material of the violin repertoire, as Javier was a devoted violin player. This project would therefore pay tribute to him.

With your generous help and our personal contribution we hope to achieve our goal, which is none other than to bring the project to life.
We should not forget either the enormous artistic effort provides by each one of the composers taking part, as they are undoubtfully the heart of the project, and I would therefore love to thank them once more.
Hoping your contribution really help it happen!
