BE PART OF THE OCEAN aims to bring the whole society closer to the ocean, by merging it fully into the knowledge of our seas and oceans, and to generate a bond that creates an involvement to the conservation and regeneration of the environment.

Your contribution to our project will make possible the creation and implementation of an artificial reef park, off the coast of Roda de Bara; and the creation and implementation of artificial reefs as an ecological beacon system off the coast of Torredembarra.

In both cases, the implementation of these structures will become a great habitat for all species in the area that will contribute to the conservation and regeneration of the marine environment while allowing to develop activities of education, leisure and sport that encourage awareness and knowledge of the marine environment.

WHAT ARE THE ARTIFICIAL REEFS??

BIOTOPO is the place that provides living space for a set of flora and fauna.

Artificial reefs, also called biotopos, are unique small works of art designed to regenerate and conserve the area's marine, flora and fauna.

They are built with a stable material in underwater conditions, and with an excellent composition for the chemical conditions of the water: little soluble in water, with a purity of 89% and a grain less than 45mm with very good geotechnical properties and low porosity.

In this material lies the differential idea with other artificial reefs, since the material is suitable for these conditions, has a nature of coral origin and adopts a totally harmonious aspect with the natural landscape.

Its external and internal mazy structure resembles a natural habitat, and the different holes and shapes with in it favor that organisms to colonize it. Some species find refuge in them, other species grow and make the egg laying and that boosts marine life increasing it by more than 70%.

BENEFITS OF THE IMPLANTATION OF THE ARTIFICIAL REEFS

Through different studies scientifically validated by oceanographers and marine biologists, we have found that the creation and implementation of biotopes has functionality, compatibility and stability.

It is an element that can have a positive impact on population dynamics, giving structural support or adequate habitat at certain stages of population growth; improving the trophic situation by increasing the availability of food by increasing the gross load capacity or total biomass of the medium; reducing natural predation by arbiter of shelter and improving survival rate in the early stages of development by the presence of suitable habitat.

MAIN USES OF THE ARTIFICIAL REEFS

• The implementation of a set of biotopes in a delimited area, creates an ideal habitat for the proliferation and development of life.

• Accessibility to parks allows education and dissemination activities to raise awareness towards the marine environment.

• The intermediate buoy system eliminates the risk by dumping as well as the loss of seabed by drag and allows mooring at the top of it.

• Unlike conventional beacon systems that engage "deads" (concrete blocks) and are removed after the summer season; the ecological beacon system does not cause sand movements as they do not retreat, allowing the marine life that has been generated around it to not be damaged and continue to increase.

TYPES OF ARTIFICIAL REEFS

Depending on their function and the characteristics of the implementation zone, we have created different models of reefs seeking to be as harmonious as possible with the environment while contributing to the maximum the regeneration and conservation of the marine flora and fauna of the area.

Their names are based on the names - real or fictional - of sunken cities as they metaphorically represent *underwater cities for all the species that inhabit them.

HOW DID IT ALL START

Miquel Rota was born in Vilafranca del Penedes in 1963 and from a young age, spent summers immersing himself in the sea of the Costa Daurada. His father started diving with autonomous system in 1964 and a few years later he followed him and later on his children would follow him. Its more than 35 years dedicated to aquariumphilia and live rock cultivation, as well as being able to practice immersion almost in every sea of the world, coupled with its great creative capacity, have served as a precedent to be able to create unique sculptures that serve as artificial reefs made with natural materials and organic shapes.

He started the project individually in 2006, by self-financing the creation and implementation of different reefs in the concession area that he has for the cultivation of live rock off the coast of Creixell.

Thanks to the success of colonization of these structures, in 2012 the City Council of Torredembarra asked him to create 9 biotopes that serve as an anchoring system for buoys that limit the bathing area. At this time, Miquel created the ecological beacon system.

Since then, He has already created and implemented more than a hundred biotopos - all unique pieces of work - in the Mediterranean as an ecological beacon system and reef park.

In addition, from this project, social and awareness-raising projects have been generated with the environment in which entities and schools from all over Europe come to visit and get to know the project up close.

THE ROTA FAMILY

In particular, we are a family that has grown by the sea and we are driven by what we love and what we believe in. Since 2006 we have run a dive center in Torredembarra (M.Rota Diving) where we do not only engage in underwater activities but, driven by the passion and love that we feel towards the environment and our work, we also develop projects to contribute to the regeneration and conservation of the marine environment and social projects in which anyone, regardless of their abilities or capacity, has the opportunity to immerse themselves in it.

Actually, the Rota Family is the whole group of people who make this team. When you are accompanied by people with whom you share passion and commitment with a common purpose, EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE.

WHY CROWDFUNDING?

Our concern lies in the relentless degradation of our shoreline. It is for this reason that we have created actions, such as the creation of reefs designed to meet different needs, that help to stop this loss of biodiversity that we have been seeing for years.

This planet belongs to all of us and it is everyone's responsibility to take care of it.

All your contributions will be entirely aimed at the construction and implementation of 6 artificial reefs that will serve as:

• Creation and implementation of a Reef Park off the coast of the town of Roda de Berà.

• Continue the implementation of biotopos as an ecological beacon system on the coast of Torredembarra with the aim of extending it on all coasts of the Mediterranean.

If we exceed the initial target of 15,000€ we will continue to build reefs to be able to implement biotopos as a beacon system and as a reef park in all those locations that wish.
