Magnolia illustrates the way a flower leads through life, from the first ray of light that sees her sprout up to the very last step of a dance that will end, symbolically, in the water.
This work will take physical form on three supports: photographic, audiovisual and editorial.
A short film, directed by Joel Burgès and Adrián Haro, will guide us through this journey, which finds its beginning in the birth of a seed, and bids us farewell with the abandonment of her body in full floral phase.
The photographic exhibition, by Sebastian Gerecz, will immortalize our dancer, allowing the author to showcase his abilities.
Long term, this same collection of photographs will become part of a book that, other than keeping a memory, will present unpublished images and thoughts on what we see and do not see in the project. A making of full of stories.
The birth of Magnolia:
What inspired us to create this project was, in truth, the loss of a friend, and the idea that we didn't really lose her. She is and will always be our magnolia, being in this way present.
Embraced by this feeling of nostalgia, we compare the fragility of life with that of this flower, and its resistance with that of memory.
Magnolia's role is crucial because all the weight of emotions falls on a single character and her way of communicating with the environment through the dance.
Magnolia will be played by a woman. We chose a female figure because so was the person we were inspired by. We consider appropriate the intervention of an actress between 25 and 30 years old, having accumulated experience without having lost gracility.
Sebastian Gerecz, an ideas machine. Author of the photographic exhibition and later book "serenidad", 2018
Joel Burgès, a fidget-bottom. Current student of Direction of Photography at ECIB
Adrián Haro, a curious mind. Designer who has worked alongside referents in his field such as Enric Jardí
Marta Soria, the one who embodies the madness of the previous three. With experience as an audiovisual producer, and writer for the publicist Joaquín Lorente
The life Magnolia is divided into six stages:
Stage 01: First contact with light
Stage 02: Struggle to see the outside
Stage 03: Detachment of her roots
Stage 04: In pursuit of water
Stage 05: Liberation and self-discovery
Stage 06: Death
Magnolia, taken as a short film, does without dialogue and is committed to the aesthetics of the message. It presents us with a choreography between the camera and the dancer.
The choice will be to use wide-angle lenses. We will shoot with different openings, depending on the shot, but our usual focal distance will be 12 mm, aiming for the maximum similarity to what the human eye perceives. These optics allow us to create a more immersive experience in which the public feels attracted both by the story and the image. Even if the viewers are not familiarized with the more technical details, they unconsciously know that something feels good.
We want this project to reach people of all ages, sectors and countries. To call for empathy, under the interpretation of each eye. And hopefully, in the best of cases, this story will in one way or another help someone. We are already enjoying this project, and we hope to create a work capable of making you enjoy with us.
All the funds received will be invested in the technical resources necessary to provide this piece with the quality and delicacy it deserves. We want to make clear that all expenses related to travelling and diets will come out of our own pockets.
The rewards:
All our backers, regardless of the amount contributed, will receive the invitation to attend the premiere of the short film, scheduled for October 2020. The tangible rewards will be delivered in hand this same day. If you are unable to attend, this will be sent by ordinary mail at the end of the same year (shipping costs included throughout the Peninsula), and the Vimeo link will be shared with you along with the password, after the premiere, so that you can view the project before making it officially public.
- The photographic session will take place in Igualada or surroundings, for an approximate duration of 2 hours, planned for a single person and only of artistic nature.
With your help, we want Magnolia to see the light. It is one of the most beautiful ways we can think of to thank her for all her love. The love she gave us, and the love she failed to give and receive back.
