Fidel Castro works on creating a new man with genetic engineering. The experiment goes wrong and these troubled, dysfunctional individuals join forces to overthrow the system that created them. One of them Elena begins to come to terms with her own humanity.

Corazón Azul

Blue Heart is a Cuban independent film in two volumes which was been filmed for 8 years. At first I hoped to find producers, but stated that if that wasn't the case I would continue just the way I have done my previous films. Guerrilla style with just two people in the crew: I handled the directing, cinematography, editing, sound and special effects, and my partner Lynn Cruz took care of the make up and costume design. Many friends provided endless favors as well. The actors were paid a symbolic amount of 15 CUC per day of shooting, a large amount when it comes out your pocket in Cuba, which meant spacing the production in order to save and be able to pay.

In 2016, one of the film's lead actors abandoned the project stating he was not happy with changes in the screenplay. The split was amicable with understanding on my part. In order to use the three scenes I filmed with him, I rewrote the script.

After wrapping up Volume 1, I needed a release form from all the actors involved. Every single one signed, expect the one who abandoned the project, who now demands an additional 2000 CUC over the 150 CUCs he received per day of filming. It's the last step necessary to release the film.

After 20 years making non-commercials films guerrilla style, I thought my working conditions were clear for everyone involved. This show from 2015 has me and the lead actors discussing the process.

But I made the mistake of not writing it a contract. This actor has now the legal right to demand a salary. I'm not going to judge him. He works in the industry and every person has different needs and interests, and I can't demand everyone to share my altruistic approach towards film. Taking legal action in a country like Cuba with me being censored is a waste of time. Many potential producers and film foundations have run way from this project and I´ve never liked asking for money. So I decided to invest time to achieve quality to make up for the lack of budget. Not live from films, to live for films. That meant endless hours in front of the computer. I have bypassed many obstacles this way, but now I'm faced with an impossible situation in a country where I´m not allowed to work because I' m censored: The actor´s scenes can't be filmed again since some of his co-stars have changed physically: A child is now a young man. I appeal to those who still believe in independent films so that Blue Heart can finally see the light of day.
