The group’s second CD made up of personalized versions of works composed by some of the greatest jazz composers of our time such as Cedar Walton, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter and Ornette Coleman along with a couple selections from the great American song book.
Who are we?
We’re a jazz band that started out as a trio with Julio Fuster on bass, Joan Vicens on tenor sax and myself on drums. Recently we’re expanded into a quartet with the addition of Jesus Núñez on alto sax. A renovation, which we can proudly say, has gone beyond our wildest expectations.
My first recording as a leader that utilized the concept of horns , bass and drums ( no piano or guitar) was the album Ana May, recorded back in the mid 90’s.
When I first heard Joan y Julio, I knew immediately that they would be perfect for a project that would continue developing the same concept. After performing several years and recording the CD “Twenty Years Later”, we decided to add a fourth member. We were spot on with the addition of alto saxophonist Jesus.
And of course if we’re going to talk about working as a team, we have to include the outstanding work of sound engineer Sergio Peiró of SP Studios (the Rudy Van Gelder of Spain) who effortlessly adapted to our needs.
The Concept
The goal of this project is the same one I have each and every time I play or get up on a bandstand: to try and capture the same spirit that fascinated me when I used to go listen yo my musical heroes. I’m of course speaking of a time when it was still possible to be in the presents of legendary jazz figures such as the groups led by Elvin Jones, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Woody Shaw’s quintet or the big bands of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman or Buddy Rich. Each one of these bands, although in many instances stylistically opposed, all had two things in common. They all swung like crazy while always maintaining their own sound.
I’ve been receiving and enjoying the inspiration of these great artists for many years now, but that’s not enough. In order for the creative cycle to complete itself, one must give back the same inspiration that he or she has received. With the outstanding assistance of incredible musicians like Julio, Joan and Jesus ( each deeply rooted in the jazz tradition), I feel that the object of our goal is quite tangible: with our CD “Firm Roots”, hopefully not only will jazz lovers enjoy the music, but maybe a few someday will be motivated to give back some of the inspiration that our jazz mentors have generously given to us.*
Where is the money going?
The funds we receive will be designated, as you can imagine, to finance the expenses of the recording studio ( the session, mix and mastering), intellectual rights, the graphic designer, record label costs, the CD factory and mailing.
Calendar
Since the music has already been recorded, once the campaign is over, our graphic designer will go to work, once that’s done, the master gets shipped off to the factory. All that should take about 6 weeks, so all patrons should be receiving there rewards about 60 days after the completion of the campaign.
