Marbella, Naturally!
The two things a kid loves the most are an illustrated book and enjoying nature. We invite you to sponsor this educational and solidary project that will combine these two passions: an illustrated book about the unknown and yet marvellous nature in Marbella.
Marbella is sun, beaches, marinas, golf courses, chameleons, wild boars, junipers, turtles, cork-oaks, mountain goats, eagles... Wild boars, turtles, mountain goats...? Yes indeed! In Marbella, apart from the historical monuments there are also natural monuments, such as the Dunes of Artola-Cabopino. Not only this, but also a wide range of less-known inhabitants that we would like you to meet. Luxury is not only present in Marbella's shops and restaurants: only in Sierra Blanca there are more endemic plant species than in the entire UK. Great luxury indeed, isn't it?
Did you know...?
This book is packed with information of the different nature sites of Marbella and their animal and plant species. It will also surprise you with amazing historical curiosities and trivia:
Did you know that the craftsmen of Marbella gathered willow stems to make baskets?
Did you know that there was a resin processing plant in the river banks of Río Verde that manufactured products like turpentine or tar? Or that fish species such as the eel were so numerous that they caused great damages to the irragation canals?
Did you know that dunes where known as barronales [beachgrass fields] because of the barrón, a sand plant that grows on them? Or that they “float” on the sand to avoid getting buried by it?
MARBELLA, NATURALY is a bilingual illustrated journey book that will bring us closer to the different nature sites of Marbella and to its animal and plant species in a way you have never seen before.
Get to know the project
This book is a continuation of the educational project of the Marbella Activa association which seeks to foster a committed and active citizenship. In fact, this is one of its main objectives as a collective. To this purpose, and thanks to the contribution of our incredible sponsors, we distributed over 700 copies of the illustrated book “Discover Marbella and San Pedro” among 25 schools of Marbella for students to discover its history, its places of interest, its cultural and historical heritage or its traditions.
This time we aim to distribute around 1,000 copies of the book among schools and high-schools of Marbella and San Pedro. We want to make available to students more resources with which to discover the city and its nature, to raise ecological awareness among them and to help both residents and visitors of Marbella find out about the natural heritage of the city. We start from the premise “that which is unknown can't be valued”: one cannot love what one ignores, a fundamental perspective to build citizenship, the main objective of our association.
Some details about the book
This illustrated bilingual book will take us on a journey through the main nature sites of our city. We have divided them into different categories: nature sites, marine biodiversity, coastline, rivers and reservoirs, geological areas, urban landscape and another section dedicated to the fauna and flora of greater interest.
Its pictures portray landscapes as iconographic as Sierra Blanca, our cork oak woods, the Abrigos de Puerto Rico, our deep sea ecosystems or vignettes of the urban nature of our parks and trees.
This polished hardcover edition by Marbella Activa contains full colour ink and watercolour paintings – in the style of a nature journal – in its fifty-eight 21 x 29cm pages, on 200 gr matte paper. We also have the luxury of counting with a preface by the great naturalist Joaquín Araujo.

You will help our students discover nature in Marbella through this unique publication. The goal of this Verkami crowdfunding campaign is set at 3,900€, this is the objective we want to achieve with your help. If we surpass that goal, you will be helping to recover part of the total project cost, which amounts to the 12,000€ with which we will pay the printing, the pictures, the translation or this campaign. One of our special sponsors is the Fuerte foundation, that supports this project by funding part of it.
The book's authors, Antonio Figueredo, Javier Lima and David Bailón, will sign over their copyrights to the Marbella Activa association. All sales earnings will be reinvested in the educational projects of the association.
Planned schedule
The crowdfunding campaign will run for approximately a month. Once we close our campaign and achieve our goal, we will continue editing the book to prepare it for its printing by the end of November. We will be able to hand it over to our sponsors and schools by December 2017.
