IRA 26-2 is a documentary by Maider Oleaga. In 2011, Maider moved to the second floor of 26 Fermin Calbetón Street in San Sebastian, where Elbira Zipitria opened the first secret Basque language school when the Basque Country was under Franco’s dictatorship. This documentary is an attempt to discover who the real Elbira was.
Our goal is to resurrect the figure of Elbira Zipitria, a woman who played an essential role in keeping our language and its identity alive, and give her the recognition she deserves. The documentary gives a chance to know her work, the life she lived, the Basque personalities with whom she interacted and we want her legacy to be present in future generations.
This documentary is an innovative project, not only because of the way in which it will be filmed (in Elbira Zipitria’s house, where the director currently lives, as a sort of video-diary), but also because we will also directly involve the community in order for them to become an integral part of this project.
MOTIVATION AND AUDIENCE
The vital role that Elbira Zipitria played in our culture is unfortunately not reflected in the general public’s knowledge about her. We believe that it is necessary that the present and future generations are aware of the risks this female activist took and the accomplishments she was able to achieve despite the adversity she faced.
Basque Language Community: People who work related to the Basque language, who live in Euskera, who use it and practice it, who are learning or teaching, institutions and promotors.
Women’s Community: Recovering this heroine and giving her the recognition she needs is essential to do her historical justice and to show her as a strong female role model in our society.
Through this documentary, our aim is to engage in the exercise of historical memory to bring back Elbira Zipitria’s achievements.
Political Community: Elbira was an influential political figure, a talented orator and we want her political work to become better known through this film.
After tireless efforts, debates and discussions, women were finally able to gain the right to vote in 1931. In those years, Zipitria was a speaker in the Emakume Abertzale Batza party and its secretary in Guipuzcoa. For the first time in history, women crossed the line from the private into the public sphere and Elbira, along with other women, brought herself to the centre of the previously prohibited public sector.
It was not an easy step to take, the world of women at that point was largely confined to the home and it was not well seen for women to be seen empowered outside of domestic duties.
Putting these boundaries outside, Elbira took the bull by the horns, blazing a trail for others to follow. She did this by turning her private space, her house, into a school.
These acts of resistance have made the liberties that we enjoy in today’s society possible. All of these actions, be they big or small, emerge as political actions.
WHAT WILL WE USE YOUR CONTRIBUTION FOR?
The proceeds that are received from this fund drive will cover part of the postproduction costs and the expenses from Verkami, Paypal and other commissions along with costs for some of the rewards.
CALENDAR
The shooting Will begin on the 27th of May in San Sebastian and finish at the end of June. The editing will take 2-3 months and we will start sending the rewards/prizes when it finishes.
