Storytelling with Designation of Origin

D.OAK # 01 is a publication born with the intention of showing the background of the work done by OAK stories from the beginning of its activity as a producer and agency of documentary projects in the year 2015.

For the first time on paper, the reader will be able to fully see the pictures of the different reports produced around the world, besides reading the experiences on the ground of the human teams that have made possible its realization.

Through their stories and testimonies, we will discover what situations and decisions have allowed them to access the stories that have subsequently been published in different national and international media.

This is the first issue of a series of collectibles where we seek to share our experience as documentalists with readers who have ever wondered what the tale behind the story is.

A formula for the public to know firsthand this profession and what makes us unique. Our designation of origin.

The team

The writing, layout and management team of this initiative is composed of Javier Corso, as the designer and coordinator of the project; Alex Rodal, as content supervisor; Wayra Ficapal, as communication director and Lautaro Bolaño, as director and audiovisual adviser of the launch campaign.

What will you find in D.OAK n1?

In this first issue of D.OAK the reader will be able to see the photos that make up the complete narrative of the Essence du Benin project, made in 2015 on the illegal traffic of gasoline from Nigeria to Benin.

Plus the Tierra Verde project, which was born in 2016, about the wealth and control of the land in Colombia through one of its most precious goods, the emerald.

Also in D.OAK you will find The Cask, a section that you can follow on our website too, dedicated to the projects that are still in maturing process.

On this occasion we are pleased to present the productions of 2017, developed in Japan and Bolivia, and for which we have added new collaborating talents like the photographer Mingo Venero.

In the Japanese case, the project is about the matagi, a community of traditional hunters living in the north of Honshū that are facing a more than likely extinction of their cultural heritage. Its main prey is the Japanese black bear and following the Fukushima incidents in 2011, the State banned many matagi communities from marketing bear meat, because of the high risk of being intoxicated by radiation.

On the other hand, in Bolivia, we have developed a documentary project that narrates the consequences of rubber boom in the Amazon. The peak of this exploitation took place in the second half of the nineteenth century, but its impact on the region remains in the present. Especially in terms of the dramatic cultural and social transformations suffered by the Amazonian indigenous populations, many of them disappeared or on the verge of extinction.

The text on the magazine has been writen by our collaborators and the signatures of the editorial team of OAK through their experience on the field: Arianna Giménez, Neus Mármol, Wayra Ficapal, Santiago Sepúlveda, Lautaro Bolaño, Alex Rodal and Javier Corso.

The workshop will last 16 hours and will consist of a theoretical part, in which each member of a branch other than OAK (research, journalism, video and photography) will talk about their individual tasks within the global project, the distribution of tasks and the coordination of such activities. The practical part will consist of a team preproduction simulation against the clock.

Calendar

The production of the magazine will be completed before the end of July and the rewards will be ready for delivery alongside the issues of the magazine in the first fifteen days of September.

The presentation of the magazine will take place in the framework of the inauguration of the exhibition of the Tierra Verde project, at the Fundació Cabanas (Sant Cugat), in the second fortnight of the same month.
