MATRIA is a short film about a defective everyday heroine. My intention is to document her daily life and present it under the veil of a fiction. A tragic reality that has no apparent ending in the film, because MATRIA is a continuous tragedy engraved with fire into the routine. Ramona, the protagonist, is all by herself but doesn't lose all faith. The hope that remains lies in her own determination and dignity, as well as in the love that unites her to her family. If anything, MATRIA wants to be a humanist film, and there is no humanity without hope.
We are a family, literally: Alvaro Gago directs & edits, José Gago (uncle) and Alberto Gago (father) produce, and Miguel Gago (cousin) is the 1st AD. The same group joined together in 2012 to shoot Curricán, a short film that went onto winning Best Director at Curtocircuito Short Film Festival & Best Film at Cans Film Festival & Primavera de Vigo Film Festival.

I've been surrounded by extraordinary women since I was born. Common to all are the following adjectives: determined, passionate and, above all, generous. Simple human beings living complex lives, which prevents them from being transparent. Sensitive women who, faced with the difficulties of their living environments, have the need to protect themselves and hide away. Only a few people can break the privacy of their shells. This scenario makes them, from a cinematographic point of view, very interesting characters. Complex characters, full of nuances, who are emotionally hard to reach. Despite their condition, they are able to pull ahead in life; and, in the same way, they could take the weight of a film, filling every frame with emotion, energy and vitality.
Your help, however small, will allow us to pay for the following:
The camera, lighting & sound equipment.
The transport & accommodation of both the technical & artistic team during pre-production & filming.
Postproduction costs: editing, sound mixing, grading, recording of the soundtrack.
Distribution: we want MATRIA to reach to as many people as possible.
Important: This is not a donation. We have organized a system of rewards that I hope will encourage you to cooperate with us. On top of the rewards, we have organised a raffle among all of our contributors in which the lucky winner will get a box of 6 bottles of wine Albariño Casa Monte Pío. We can assure you this wine is really something. By the way, it just got an award at the 2016 Mileurismo Gourmet Wine Competition.
