The Light We Left Behind is a fiction short film about adolescence, memory, and saying goodbye. An intimate and melancholic story that captures the last day of two young people who once shared everything… before each goes their separate way.

With your support, we want to bring this film to life: a very personal project, written and directed with sensitivity, aiming to move, to make people remember — and also, to heal.

🌊 What’s the film about?

Unai and Elena reunite at school. Despite the time that’s passed, something still sparkles between them. They decide to skip class and run away together on the TRAM toward the beach. During that improvised journey, they revisit a childhood secret.

But Unai is hiding something: he’s moving away that very night. Elena has a secret too: she’s always been in love with him.

Throughout the day, they’ll wander through empty streets, moving trains, unlit fireworks… One last journey before everything changes forever.

🧠 A Story About Memory

This project isn’t just about teenage love — it’s about the moments that shape us and, though brief, stay with us forever. A walk between nostalgia and acceptance, between what could have been and what was. A kind of cinema that looks at the past from the present with delicacy and poetry.

The narrative blends everyday realism with touches of symbolism and visual emotion. The entire short film relies on imagery full of meaning: passing trains, silences, childhood objects… and above all, the light.

👥 Who We Are

The project is directed by Jose A. Ruiz, a young filmmaker with an intimate and sensitive vision. His previous short film, The Astronomer, has been selected in over 15 national and international festivals.

Behind this new film is a young but dedicated team, working with passion and making the most of every resource. We’ll be shooting in and around Alicante, using real locations, young actors, and a carefully crafted visual style.
