We are facing a prehistoric town from the Copper Age (III Millennium BC). It is located in the Alto Guadiato valley, in the North of the province of Córdoba (Andalusia, Spain). It is a high walled town.

In 2022, a superficial archaeological survey was carried out with the aim of documenting signs that would indicate the presence of a possible metal workshop. The results were positive and we moved on to the second phase of the project, which is the archaeological excavation. In this campaign we want to document the metal workshop and also the wall, we intend to excavate a small section and obtain a chronology of said structure whose exact chronology is unknown until now.

This metallurgical activity that was carried out inside the town along with the various mines documented around said town, demonstrates the existence of an important mining-metallurgical activity in the area. We would be the first societies to practice metallurgy in the North of the province of Córdoba, these studies would allow us to shed a little light on these population groups of Recent Prehistory.

On this hill, in the shady part, there is a shelter called "Carmel shelter" that houses some rock paintings, of schematic art. In this campaign we will carry out a complete study of the various panels that are found in said shelter. Studying these paintings will allow us to get closer to these population groups whose economy was agricultural.

About us:

We are a research group from the University of Granada. We are studying the beginnings of mining and metallurgy in the North of the province of Córdoba, which corresponds to the central part of Sierra Morena. The objective is to document this focus of important metallurgy that existed in Recent Prehistory, which joins the focus of the Southwest and Southeast of the peninsula.
