What is Minbera?
"Minbera" is a drama film that focuses on a Basque family living in Madrid that no longer can ignore the situation they are dealing with. Death and the mechanisms humans have in order to face it take stage center in the narrative: trauma, grief, shame and guilt. It describes the individual process of coming to terms with a reality that can’t be rationalised. A reality in which money is given to two children by the government in exchange of their dead parents.
This project began with a script written by Beñat Uribe-etxebarria, the director of the film. Along came Diego Cámara (Cinematographer and Executive Producer), Delia Postigo (Production Coordinator), Gonzalo Mesanza (Head Sound Technician) and Xabier Fernández (1st Assistant Director). All together we shot Minbera this summer of 2023.
With this project we want to talk about losing faith in goodness, losing faith itself and about getting tired of not being understood or of being asked/forced to be a person who is easy to understand.
Please enjoy this short teaser that we have put together ourselves as a proof of what we intend to achieve with your help.
Who are we
● Beñat Uribe-etxebarria. Beñat studied Audiovisual Communication at the University of the Basque Country and later moved to the UK where he studied the MA Film Practice at Arts University Bournemouth. He is currently working as a production assistant in TV.
● Diego Cámara has produced four independent short films and one feature film. He is co-funder of The North Pixel, a media company that has worked with big names like Toys R’ Us and Amazon Fashion.
● Delia Postigo has completed her formation as an actress at Cristina Rota school for actors in Madrid where she currently lives and keeps attending courses to improve her acting skills.
● Gonzalo Mesanza is the other co-funder of The North Pixel. Not only is he a producer but also an expert photographer who travels around the world making the most of his passion.
● Xabier Fernández is a film director himself. But his biggest passion is poetry. His work as a poet has been exhibited this year for the first time in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Starting from the top: Álvaro Orive and Yaiza Medinilla. Below them: Unai Arrieta and Maite López. All together with Delia Postigo they are the main cast of Minbera.
What are we raising funds for
Thanks to our own financial effort we’ve been able to shoot the film this last summer. We shot the film in Madrid and Bilbao. But, if the film has been already shot, then why are we raising money now? Well, we are aware of how difficult it is to ask people to trust a project blindly, only based on loglines and rough ideas and sketches. Which is why we decided to wait until we had something material that proved the potential of this film. We hope that by offering you images of what we could achieve with your help and by showing the hard work and effort we have all put on this project will inspire people and help them to trust us and our project and will eventually be an invite to join us in this last push.
The money will be used for both the post-production and the distribution of the film. We want to hire an experienced editor who can work on this project full-time. Once the film is finished, it will be submitted to multiple festivals that suit our project and artistic interest best.
Editing
The editing phase of a film involves selecting and arranging recorded footage to create a coherent and visually engaging narrative. That is why we want to hire an experienced editor to work on the film full-time.
Colour grading
Color grading in film is the post-production process of adjusting and enhancing the colors and tones of a video or film to achieve a specific visual style, mood, or artistic effect. It will allow us to fine-tune the look of their footage to match the intended atmosphere and storytelling goals.
Sound post-production
Experience has taught us that often times sound ends up being completely ignored by filmmakers when they make their first features. It is the greatly forgotten element that comes back to bite you once the completed film is showed to an audience. Which is why we have treated sound with the outmost care all throughout the production. So now it is not the time to leave it behind. We want to hire a professional that will work on various aspects of the film's audio, including dialogue and sound effects.
Original Soundtrack
From the moment we conceived Minbera we knew that music, or lack of thereof to be more precise, would play an important role in the film. Although silence will play a big part in the film, our passion for music made us find the right moment and meaning for music in Minbera. We have a team of musicians working on it already, but we would like to financially support their creation.
Distribution
When the time for sending out our completed film comes, we want to be able to afford the often times expensive submission fee for film festivals all around the world. Our strategy doesn’t limit the distribution aspect of the film to festivals alone. We will in time reach out to film platforms like Filmin in Spain so that it can be reached by a wide range of audience that consume debut features of new up-and-comers.
Calendar
It is difficult to give now a precise date for the completion of Minbera, but our wish is to have it finished by mid-2024.
