My name is Janez Janša

#15 / My Name Is Janez Jansa – First Review

Name
Name

Couple of week ago we organized a test screening of My Name Is Janez Jansa at Kinodvor in order to check the quality of the color correction, the exactness of the graphics, captions and subtitles and, last but not least… the state of the sound mix, which is basically the main technical issue we still have to overcome. It was quite a feeling to see the movie finally running on a large screen.

There were only few of us at the screening plus the film critic and TV anchorman Marcel Štefančič jr. The guy then wrote a review that was published yesterday in the weekly magazine Mladina. This is the very first review about our movie...

P.S. At the moment the review is only in Slovenian. Next week we will post the English translation. Dear international friends… stay tuned!

#14 / Live Crowdfunding Party

I left you another week without feeds. Shame on me!

But, again, you know, there were a lot of important things to do the main one being the organization of the Live Crowdfunding Party at BI-KO-FE last Friday.

The party was great. Lot's of people and good vibes. But most of all... we were able to collect 558 Euro for our movie! We are so happy. Now we just need an extra little effort to finally reach the goal. Only 815 Euro more and the jackpot will be our. The final countdown has started. This is the last week!

We have no good photos of the party as we were too busy enjoying it. But here I post for you the 4 type of T-Shirts we produced for the crowdfunding. Do you like them?

#13 / SHARED IDENTITY

Name
Name

Since the early 1990s the question of shared identity was always ubiquitous in the global massmedia and peer-to-peer networks. And now the lovely and subversive case of Janez Jansa pops up in our system of perception and sneaks into everybodys attention. The only truly global common denominator of human culture is film, and now this - big screen - magic is abused by a group of rogue artists trying to steal what is already theirs...

#11 / Crowdfunding party at Bi-Ko-Fe

Dear supporters of the movie My Name Is Janez Janša, yes, I did it again... I wasn't writing for quite a while on this blog. But I had a good excuse for not doing it. I actually took advantage of the International Workers' Day to do concentrate on some technical issues about the doc and on its promotion.

As the result of this efforts we managed to get 3 new media sponsors: The internationally distributed magazine Neural dealing with new media art, electronic music and hacktivism, the Slovenian weekly current affairs magazine Mladina and my favourite radio station, Radio Študent, a must-listen-to when I drive around Ljubljana.

They all placed the banner of our movie on their website and are actively helping us pushing the crowdfunding further.

We will also do our part in that sense: we will do a CROWDFUNDING PARTY at Be-Ko-Fe, next Friday, 11th of May at 10 PM !!!

#09 / Prince

Prince
Prince

In 1993, Prince was fed up with his label, Warner Bros, with whom he had signed a $100 million deal less than a year before. They wanted him to release fewer CDs so he wouldn't flood the market. The artist responded by accusing Warner of stifling his creativity but he couldn't get out of his contract so he decided to change his name to an unpronounceable combination of the symbols for male (♂) and female (♀). In order for the media to use the symbol, his record label had to mail out thousands of floppy disks with a custom font.

Officially, the singer explained his new designation in a press statement by saying: ''It is an unpronounceable symbol whose meaning has not been identified. It's all about thinking in new ways, tuning in 2 a new free-quency.''

What about introductions?

As he told an interviewer in 1995, ''I get by. I don't need a name as such, really.''

#08 / WHAT'S MY NAME?

In 1967, before the boxing fight, Terrell refused to call Ali by his name. Instead he insisted on calling him Cassius Clay. Ali told him and the press that he was going to punish him mercilessly and make him say his real name.

WATCH THE VIDEO

During the fight Ali called out "What's my name?" to Terrell.

In and interview with Howard Cosell on ABC not long after the match Muhammad Ali apologized for talking to Terrell throughout the fight, and saying "what's my name" then hitting him. However he said he did it so Terrell and other people would respect his religious beliefs. Terrell ended up saying "Muhammad Ali"...

#07 / Thatcher vs. Thatcher

During the United Kingdom general election in 1983 an interesting name change took place.

In May 1983 Mr Colin Hanoman changed his name to Margaret Thatcher and, on the same date, Mr Simon Stansfeld changed his name to Ronald Regan.

Subsequently, on May 23, Mr Thatcher personally submitted nomination papers to the returning officer for the Finchley constituency with himself as candidate and Mr Regan as agent. His description was “Conservationist Party”.

Mladen Dolar is one of the fil rouge of our doc. He appears several times and every time with something intriguing and straight to the point. This is one of his interventions.

All the graphic animations are the work of Luka Umek. Thumb up for both of them!

#03 / Do you know anyone with the same name and surname as yours?

If yes, then this is a case of homonymy!

Your name is there to make you stand out, to differentiate you from others. But then you might run into someone who has the very same name as you. Homonymy can be a problem, rather serious problem, a problem that might mass up the whole system…

This is made very clear in this fragment of the movie »My Name Is Janez Jansa« feauturing the Dominican immigrant Héctor Ramirez Delgado who is having troubles with homonymy since he was a child.

http://player.vimeo.com/video/40007231

Enlighten by this story I started to ask people around me about this topic and then I made this patchwork out of their answers…

http://player.vimeo.com/video/40007287

In the next days I’ll post couple of more radical examples of homonymy. In the meantime if you have short personal stories to tell about homonymy I’ll be happy to read them.

Today I worked hard on the movie and at the end of the day it turned out to be a very positive day. In the morning Marcela and I went for a meeting at Teleking which is a department of the company Artrebel. They invited us after reading all the mess that is happening in the Slovenian press around our movie (Slovenian readers can read all articles here: http://www.mynameisjanezjansa.com/?page_id=162) Since they are… leer más
