For your information…
One of crowdfunding’s many virtues is its ability to set us free and make us more independent, which means it’s a great tool for journalism.
One of the first projects to make the most of this was the fortnightly publication Diagonal, which funded a new website by raising nearly €20,000 when Verkami had only been up and running for six months. This successful venture has been followed by other inspiring projects, including one by Mèdia.cat, which managed to release two editions of its Annual Report on Media Silence. The cooperative MásPúblico, which managed to fund part of the launch of ‘La Marea’ magazine, La Tuerka, exceeded its funding goal more than threefold. TerceraInformación raised €15,000 last summer and set up the weekly La Directa. Very recently funding was raised for Synkratos, a social network for sharing news that was backed by Cafè Amb Llet, which also raised almost €25,000 in just six days to publish their book ‘¿Dónde está mi dinero?’, which exposed a corruption scandal in the Catalan healthcare system.
To date, Verkami has helped fund over 80 journalism projects, and you can now find some great ideas in need of your support, such as Kaos en la red and the politics and economics journal SinPermiso.
We’re the best placed to ensure we get independent information, so keep supporting projects like these!
