Project description

We S'Agulla environmental entity, non-profit association dedicated to the study and spread of information about the natural environment of the region of La Selva (Catalonia-Spain). During the years 2011-12 we have studied the seabed of the Costa Brava South between Blanes and Tossa de Mar at depths between 50-70m, where we found a "forest" of spectacular gorgonians (sea animals that resemble corals). They are the largest gorgonians ever described in the Mediterranean sea which also provide a habitat for numerous species of commercial interest such as groupers, dentex, john dories, spiny lobsters and lobsters, among many others. If you are interested in these communities so little known you can follow us on our blog, where you will find plenty of pictures and descriptions of our work in these seabeds.

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT
The aim of our Project is to complete the "map" of the seabed in the area between Blanes and Tossa de Mar within the range of 30-50m deep. Our study will allow us to know the area in detail and assess the environmental impact of human activities that take place such as professional and sport fishing, anchoring boats and the presence of emissaries.

HOW TO GET IT
Using side scan sonar technology will produce an image of the seabed to locate the different types of habitats that make up the study area (slabs, broken rock, stretches of sand, etc.). Subsequently, a team of divers will explore the most characteristic species to assess their conservation status.

The budget for this Project is of € 5,000 of which € 3,000 will be invested in obtaining the sonar image (requires boat rental, state-of-the-art sonar, processing and interpretation of the data by an expert). The rest will go to the dives: renting a boat and air fills for volunteer divers of S'Agulla association. The general public can follow the progress of this Project at the same blog.

The visual material obtained with this Project will be used to promote awareness programs, environmental education, promotion and organization of debates and conferences. Finally this project will culminate in the exhibition "The Underwater Gardens of La Selva" within the frame of the activities scheduled to promote good management of the environment.

WHY IS THIS STUDY IMPORTANT?
Continuing the project begun in 2011 is important as the conservation and management of natural areas of unique or high ecological value requires, as a basis for implementation, the knowledge of the environment.
