I live in Mas Sauró, a very unusual neighborhood. It’s part of Barcelona despite of being out of it, hiding behind the Tibidabo mountain in the forest of Collserola. Here we live in harmony in about 160 houses located on small pieces of land, people of all social and economic levels from all over the world. This social and cultural mix of people coming from all over the world, a small Tower of Babel reflection of Catalan society in miniature, has created the varied and often chaotic architectural landscape, from shacks and small simple houses, to architect-designed buildings, contemporary chalets, wooden houses, a teepee, two masias, a modernist mansion, and the Santa María de Vallvidrera church, built towards the end of the Gothic period.
I spent 2013 visiting my neighbors, house after house. I took 140 portraits, one of each family, with an old film Hasselblad camera and the natural light I found on every space. I also made an interview to each one of my neighbors, and then convert it into a short text, like a tuit that goes along every image.
¿WHAT WILL THE MONEY BE USED FOR ?
All contributions will be used to make and print the book.
¿WHEN WILL THE BOOK BE READY?
We are currently making the design and layout of it. The aim is to press it in mid-March to have it printed in mid-April ... And try to deliver to you for Sant Jordi!
¿WHAT WILL THE BOOK LOOK LIKE?
It will be an artist photo book, a unique and very special object, in a limited edition. A hardcover large format book, with about 140 pages printed on high quality paper. It will include:
The 140 photographs (about 60 full-page and the rest in a smaller size)
A magical short story that tells the history of the neighborhood, written by well-known Catalan journalist and neighbor of Mas Sauró Toni Arbonés, from the point of view of the oldest tree in the place.
Some maps drawn by architect and neighbor of Mas Sauró Nestor Piris.
The design by Borja Martínez, LoSiento studio founder.
And an introduction written by me.
All texts are in Spanish and Catalan.
Along with the release of the book, the project will be exhibited in Pere Pruna Gallery, in Barcelona, between may 29th and june 19th 2014, as part of the DOCfield14, Fotografía documental Barcelona.
¿WHY TO BE PART OF THE PROJECT ?
Because now more than ever, is the time to believe in people and the strength of communities. It's time to go for the face to face communication, to get closer to our neighbor with respect, greet, dedicate him a smile and lend him a hand. And this book is just that, the celebration of a community of anonymous people and every one of their lives, the search for a common identity beyond their differences, and the attempt to bring them closer to each other from their identification and mutual knowledge.
Because supporting each other and fighting together to make our dreams come true is the only way to face the corruption of lots of politician and the lies of the banks and the large corporations... And gathering illusions with a collective spirit we can go much further!
And because I hope that this attitude will spread, humanizing us all a little more...
Thanks for your contribution and for helping me spreding this project. Together we'll make it happen!
