"Out of this life" project emerges as a need to give voice to people who have suffered the consequences of the stigma related to mental health, particularly suicide.
I started the project in 2015 in Kenya, the country where I lived the last 5 years.
What it really pushed me to carry out this work, was the fact that suicide is considered a crime by the Kenyan Penal Code, and the sentence can be two years in prison, a fine or both.
From the beginning of the project it was clear that the format must be a photobook. First because its durability and secondly because it is a very effective way to transmit knowledge.
I like to think about this book as an object passing from hand to hand and, at the same time, giving visibility to a problem which has been silenced due to the stigma and prejudices.
"Out of this life", is an invitation to a necessary dialogue in any community that condemns suicide because of social, religious or cultural reasons.

I am Patricia Esteve. I work photography from the emotion because I consider it the only way to show the humanity in my stories, a way to generate a kind of empathy to the people who are looking at my images. Most of the subjects of my projects are current social issues linked to exclusion and stigma hidden in our society. I believe that working on these projects I can help people; with my photos they can find a way to tell their stories to their community.
